The gift of...Nothing?

Yes, that's right folks! What better a gift to buy a loved one for the holidays than the gift of absolutly nothing?


Surprisingly enough, this is very real, not to mention hilarious. My brother found out about it earlier today, and I felt the need to share it with you all.
People are actually paying money for nothing and giving it to loved ones as a gift; do you think it's genius? downright outrageous? Or does it simply make you question the very intelligence of people these days?
On a personal note, I think it's brilliant:

Well unless it's a vacuum in that little bubble then you are actually buying something, oxygen, nitrogen etc. Even if it was you would still be buying some packaging which is something. I also think it's bunch of unnecessary waste but that's another topic.

IMO I think it would have been much funnier (and more accurate) if people literally just got nothing, they just simply gave their money away.

Ever heard of the story of "The Gift of the Magi"?

Basically, a struggling, working-class couple are seeking to find the perfect gift for eachother. The man has a spectacular pocket watch, but no spectacular chain to accompany it. The woman has lovely hair, but has no lovely comb to groom it with. So, in response to these contradictions, and with Christmas Day coming tomorrow, the two go out and search for that perfect add-on to make their significant other's Christmas grand.
So, the woman goes to a watch shop, which, after looking high and low, finds the PERFECT gold chain to accompany her husband's watch. But, ironically, it's the most expensive item in the store, and she just doesn't have the funds to buy it. Desperate to buy the chain, and wanting the best for her husband, she goes to a wig maker, and, sadly... cuts her elegant, flowing hair and sells it, scraping in just enough funds to buy the chain.
Meanwhile, the man searches through many a beauty shop, looking high and low for that perfect comb. Eventually, he stumbles upon an elegant, luxurious ivory comb, embedded with pearls and fine finishes. But of course, as what happened with his wife, he didn't have nearly enough funds to buy the comb. Desperate to buy the one-of-a-kind accessory, and wanting so dearly to make her wife's Christmas truely special, he digs deep into his pocket, grabs his watch, and, sadly... sells it off for cash. With the newly obtained money, he buys the comb.
As the sun rose of Christmas day, both came to the Christmas tree, and, ironically... the woman's hair was cut short. This nearly devastated the man and his hopes for a happy Christmas, but strived on, and gifted her the comb. Flabbergasted, and yet shocked, she reaches into her pocket, and gives her husband the gold chain. To his amazement, and shock... he didn't have the watch, much like how his wife didn't have the hair for the comb. So, essentially... they bought the gifts for nothing, which, in turn... they bought nothing.
But it was the thought, the very thought of their passion and strive for eachother, that made that Christmas one of their best.

So, in a sense, buying nothing could be the best Christmas investment you could make.

I got one of these for my sister about 2 years ago, she loved it.
It's a triumph of marketing and a satirical take on packaging and consumerism. I guarantee it'll put a smile on the face of who-ever you give it to.

It's got a hilarious warning on the back;
"Caution: If you open this packet and "something" happens, please return to the manufacturer"

I think the saddest part about this product is how it's more useful than a lot of other somethings.

It's a joke product, but it also is making a point, that in just about any purchase you are actually paying for the packaging as much as the product. They have simply dispensed with the "product" side of things.

My sister was doing a design course at the time and actually used this in part of her thesis.

What happens when you get it and realise it's not nothing and in fact contains a massively overbearing sense of self-satisfied pretension?

I'm just messin with ya, I'm sure many people do find this sot of thing a clever and witty observation on our modern consumerism - if nothing else it does neatly highlight the fact that you can sell any old crap if you convince people in the right way - it's like irony within irony within irony - really quite deep if you try to look for the depth....

We're all just jealous we didn't think of it first.

But I've started making my own version.
