How to be a leader question?

When I play online and the game picks me to be a leader. I can't see the other players that join. But if I join someone else everything seems fine. Why does this work for the other person and not for me. I just exit to pod and hope the person follows. Restarting doesn't seem to fix this. How are others getting around this problem? :)

Dont pass the the little sack stop sign at the start of a level, once you pass that no one else can join the level other than to view it.
