How to Make Black Holograms

We all know that the hologram when put @ 0% brightness or stickered black is just invisible. Well no longer! In 10 easy steps you can have a black hologram (Albeit without animation but that's not the important part)

Step 1: Take Hologram Material @ 100% Brightness
Step 2: Sticker Black
Step 3: Pause Game
Step 4: Place Destroyer & Battery @ 100% on Hologram, Wire battery to destroyer
Step 5: Set Destroyer to Fade <- VERY IMPORTANT
Step 6: Capture Object
Step 7: Create Holo @ 0% brightness
Step 8: Place Emitter with following settings on the 0% Holo and the holo you captured in the emit slot
Lifetime: Infinite
Time: 0.0
Emit: Fade

Step 9: Unpause Game

You now have a Black hologram
The only problems I find are that when it is on a mover it has a slight tail and you cant have too many on the screen at a time.

You can change the life time to 0.1 and max emitted same time to 1.
Also the fade effect when emitted wont be necessary.

If you change destroying effect to disappear and emitting effect to fade you get nice ghost effect.

Whoa, that reticule you got there looks awesome.

Interesting how this could be used for the 'fog of war' as well.

Tried this... for whatever reason it was not visible in preview or play mode... any ideas what's wrong?

Did you remember to set the holo being destroyed to 100%? other than that I haven't had it not show up.

Did you try going through all the steps again by yourself, or are you still trying to use the one I set up to show you? It's possible I missed a step, but I can't see how considering we could see it in Create mode. Maybe our conclusions were right and it won't be visible with a rotator on it? A while later I was thinking, you might want to try slowing the rotator speed down, that might have been the problem too. If it is and you can get it to rotate slower but still fast enough to give you your desired effect, this still might be a great option for you. :)

See what happens when you hook this emitter up to some sort of control! Active signal means darkness is on, inactive means it is off; the darkness obscures everything that is int it.

Not sure if the constant emission for every blob of dark holo on a map would throw up performance issues but this could be a very practical alternative to the fog of war solution that is using the lightstick deco.

Even better solution: instead of constantly emitting pieces of holo, just use a piece of chrome glitched holo with its brightness set to 1%!

so what happens when you sticker black holo?

Stickers on black holo look pretty much the same; it's just that lighter colors, rather than darker ones, are transparent. I think.

That's an awesome tutorial! Never knew you could make hologram black!
Can be really useful for zoom in stuff and other things.

ummm, so you have to just keep emitting the hologram to keep it black, no capturing and replacing it?

There is another way to create the same Black Material without the need for emitting. Just set the Neon material to 0% brightness...

This works well for moving through other materials...
