What do you think of today's music?

I have come to notice that almost every big star on Disney HAS to be a singer. It is so ridiculous. Most of them don't even have any singing ability. They use computers and lip syncing to get famous.

And then theres all the pop and rap music.... Don't even get me started. I tried listening to the new music that has been coming out, but I just can't take it. If you can't tell that they are using computers to fix up their voice, you must be crazy. I just can't see why people like Justin Beiber as well. I looked at one of concert videos, and he lip syncs.

I listen to the 80's music, because that was when good music was made. My dad loves that music still, and can't stand the music either. My brothers watch those stupid disney music show things and I can't stand them. They are so stupid and make no sense. It is as if all shows NEED to have relationships now too.

I wish I lived in a time where more things made sense....

Have you ever tried listening to some recent rock music or even country? The way they've taken music lately is turning out to be quite awesome, and some artists (Zach Brown Band, Adele, Plain White T's, Jack Johnson) that have been churning out music lately are some of my favorites so far. Just because they don't grab the media's attention and make the headlines doesn't mean that they're crap. In fact, it's quite the reverse.

Today's pop music and rap is just adapting to an ever-changing medium. At this point, kids are so stoned and wasted from whatever they've been smoking that anything with a loud bass and lyrics about (things I cannot mention on this website) is guaranteed record-smashing sales. And the younger groups need their own idols to look up to, i.e. Justin Bieber (the kid's alright... at least compared to everyone else). Justin is just using an old trick from the book; Brittany Spears did the exact same thing in the 90's.

For me, the 80's prove an old saying: it was the best of times, it was the worst of times. Sure, we got some good stuff coming out of there, but that's also where pop (that crap everyone listens to now these days) was born as was hair metal. That and the big names back then were long-haired, bloodshot-eyed skinny dudes who wore skin-tight leather pants and spikes in various places. Then again, I rarely listen to the 80's; the two decades before were a lot better (Beach Boys, The Eagles, The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, etc.).

And about the Disney thing... that channel has degraded so much that I can't even bare giving it a glance anymore. Every "star" that appears on that channel ends up being a washed-up wanna-be. I mean, look what happened to Lindsey Lohan and Miley Cyrus.

If you really want an in-depth look into today's music, turn off MTV or VH1, or whatever you're watching, and look around. You'll be quite surprised.

Me too! I like older bands too, I still listen to some of the new country music such as Taylor Swift, Selena Gomez, but I only listened to one or two of their songs, the only ones I liked, I hate hard rock, I hate rapping.. I like Boston, I like Rascal Flatts, Rascal Flatts is my favorite band. I don't like old, old music, but around that time :)

I'm pretty sure there also were people who didn't exactly kill themselves singing in the past, but most of us remember the bee's knees. I don't think there's anything wrong with today's music. Some recent bands have really been making my day, everyday since I first listened to them, like The Script, Cage The Elephant, Selah Sue, Gorillaz or James Blunt. I really enjoy listening to pop music too, like P!nk or Avril Lavigne. I just try to select what I listen to and make do with what I've picked. It's not like there's only Justin Bieber in the world, there are plenty of artists that are waiting for you to listen to their songs.

And when I feel it's not enough, I eventually fall back on older songs or indie music, which is for me, the best thing since peanut butter.

Pfft. Hipsters doesn't listen to music, they listen to art.

While most new music of any kind does not interest me.
Devo made a new album last year and that has kept my hopes up still.
And I always like to see what Beck comes up with.

IMO most noticeable popular new music fails because they put too much faith into their badly written lyrics and make them stand out too much from the background music.
And they pound you with a very repetitive chorus so you remember it even if you don't wanna.

Weird Al is always there to make fun at least, though now I don't even know most the songs he spoofs.

But I liked that one song that has people riding on mopeds and a marching bad lip-syncing.
And some lady in a house that has glass cups arranged across the floor can sing extremely well.
(someone at my house turned on a top ten thingy)

And best thing of all, Tom Waits is still active.

I'm mainly into Dubstep and Drum and Bass; stuff like Nero, Pendulum, Chase and Status, Skrillex, Flux Pavillion, that sort of thing. Electronic aswell, like DeadMau5 and The Firmament. But in general, pop music is great to listen to for a few times, then you want to just switch to another song, then another, then another... I've got more pop music in my library than any other genre, not because I like it more, but because there's so much more of a selection, and it gets boring faster so I have to switch up the songs more often. But sometimes there's an artist which just blows away the rest of mainstream crap. I was just listening to Eminem's Space Bound for a few hours and I'm still not bored. So, there is good mainstream material out there; it's just it's so deeply submerged in the rubbish that it's almost untraceable. Find an underground genre you like and you'll have a wealth of good songs to listen to, which suit your tastes. :p

Theonlybub, from your OP it sounds like you only listen to a very limited selection of music. Pop music has always been extremely stripped down to bare elements and almost always psychologically constructed to appeal to the largest listener demographic using certain chordal/modal interchanges, actually almost never deviating from the circle of fifths.

Pop music is designed by an institution to create capital/revenue based on market research and current (often seeded) cultural trends. It is nothing to do with music creation as an art.

To answer your question though, 'current music' is actually very innovative and creative if you look in the right places. The technology backing electronic music production is becoming very intelligent and some very interesting sounds are about in certain musical sub-cultures at the moment, especially some of the more experimental stuff. Boards of Canada come to mind as does Ortecha and allot of the more heavy stuff, NiT GriT has some really catchy tunes if you're into Dubstep. Then there's the older stuff like Steve Vai and of course the Beatles, Hendrix, Frank Zappa e.t.c. (just off the top of my head)

These people are actual artist and became artists because of a natural compulsion to express through the medium of shaping sound, completely different from POP artists that almost always become 'artists' (if you can call them that) as a catalyst to becoming a celebrity, they often have no actual true inspiration for music, tend to be quite shallow and have an industry of people around them telling them what to sing, how to act and what to wear.To put it in a nutshell, Simon Cowell is a poisonous curse on a generation.

The point is, if you spend some time delving under the surface of music as a medium you will find a lot of artist that still retain the un-pretentious, unique and emotionally charged perspective that is vital to good music production. Seriously, turn off the Disney channel, NEVER EVER turn it back on and do what you must to develop a bit of cultural integrity in music. It will do you a lot of good. :)

First off, I was only talking about pop and it was MY OPINION not anyone Else's. What I listen to is mostly Christian music because of its soothing tone and quiet nature. I also listen to Weird Al, country, and some jazz.

I find that each person's opinion is different and they are entitled to it, but some people are stereotyping me.

Second, I do not watch MTV, Disney, or whatever VH1 is, I don't like watching things that will fry my brain.

Third, I have listened to every genera of music, so I know what is out there. I don't need to "look around", I already did, and I'm sticking to what I listen to know.

I LOVE the beatles, they really were one of the greatest bands of all times, and I would have loved to see them in concert.

Stupid Bouffant hair-do's, ridiculous Shoulder-Pads, Too much make-up, leg-warmers, sweat-bands ; and that was just the fashions..

LOL Well, I don't think music has gotten too bad. It's just that managers and labels advertise their products more so than others, and they appeal to a more... "juvenile" audience.

Kids today just like something that's catchy and has something to make them smile or laugh. Whether it's a melody or a "face". You're just exposed to more "bad" music than "good" music because that's what sells nowadays.

But trust me...good music is out there. I think this generation has the best (THE BEST!) underground music ever created imo.

There are literally thousand of indie artist out there making great music; some way ahead of their time in creativity and production.

Listen to some Ochre or Emancipator or Hans Zimmer or John Powell. Those are currently my favorite artists; can't get enough of their music. :love:

I mostly listen to music scores or cinematic music. But that's just a personal preference and it's something I'm trying to get paid to do if you catch me. ;)

Bust also dude, instead of "today's music", i think you should rather say "today's popular music" because that's what I think you're most referring to.

With the current advancements in technology, music has reached it's peak of perfection. Nothing in any time period comes close to the level of production that producers and musicians are capable of acheiving today...imo... :p

Couldn't agree more. Kids have this obsession with god-qwul music these days, no one digs trough the old stuff.

My main problem with the type of singers you mentioned is they are just singers. They have no talent, anyone can sing a song, to be good you need to play some form of instrument, to give your songs a personality. That's what's missing.

And who says the 80's were bad? They had people singing dunk and drugged, the only person who does that nowadays is Amy Winehouse, and she can't do it properly.

I absolutely love James Blunt, again, he can play guitar, piano, ect. He has his own style and he composes his stuff. Which is what makes good music.

Although, nothing ostracises you from your peers faster than "old music" ;

I've learned a thing or two about music in my time; I'm a music graduate.

And as I was studying, I was always interested to learn how the musicians that I liked to listen to were influenced by the musicians that came before them. SO I started working my way backwards through the musical timeline.

I'm currently plumbing the depths of 1920's blues - which, because I understand it's setting, the social/political backdrop of the music, and how it went on to influence subsequent generations, I find infiniately fascinating.
But I can't count the amount of time I've been banned from touching a stereo because they don't trust what I'm going to put on.... so it ends up some crappy, paint-by-numbers repetitive dance number.

Being close minded with the universal message of music is stupid.
Doing it for religions or polithics is worse.

As the promoted music gets worse, the disregarded music gets better. I feel that the underrated and underground artists put so much more effort into their music because they know they'll have a more loyal audience at the end of the day and have a steady, more dependable source of income instead of skimming the top while you're hot and trying to snatch as much money as possible before your inevitable fall and disappearance from the public memory after a few months. The slow path has flaws, but the logic is sound.

I stopped listening to Pop and Rap about 6 or 7 years ago because after that, there weren't even any good riffable/narmy songs anymore. Those genres had become, and still are (IMO) boring.

I think sites in the vein of Pandora are the greatest thing to ever happen because they help you discover new music based on what you already like. Even if you think you know a genre inside and out, you'll find one more artist or song that'll catch your ear and beckon you to add that sweet sound to your collection. *huggles account* I listen to Indie, Electronic (IDM, specifically), Christian (Which is currently experiencing a strong shift closer to Indie, anyway), and Punk. I've got enough untapped resources to last me for ages, which I wouldn't have thought possible had it not been for sites like that.

Back to Pop, Disney cranks out music stars because guess what you can do with children's music? Make toys AND music. Seriously, they get money from every single type of merchandise in existence when they do this. Do you remember going into stores and seeing Miley Cyrus backpacks, candy, clothes, video games (yes, she had several), jewelry, coloring books, dolls, sunglasses, markers and crayons, and I'm pretty certain there was a brownie maker on the shelves at one point. The merchandising was over the top, but guess what? Kids bought that stuff. I have even seen little boys with Justin Beiber and Jonas Brothers shirts on, so it's not like Disney's only making money off of little girls. They're getting serious profit from pumping out singers. At the cost of some dignity, sure, but they were never really about that in the first place. If they deviate from it, they won't make anywhere near as much money as they are now.

I'm kind of surprised that Pop still has a stranglehold on the market. With the spread of the internet, you'd think people would find it easier to expand their horizons a bit, even by accident. Say what you want about iTunes, but that program 's built-in suggestion tool is what alerted me to the musicians below the surface. All I did was glance in the sidebar while I was clicking on one of my songs. That's all it takes. Some television shows and commercials now credit the songs they use in the lower corner of the screen. The phrase "Today's music" no longer has to be synonymous with "Pop and Rap" since so many tools to help discover new music are on the rise, yet here we stand.

I know I used to enjoy one internet music reviewer's show in which he used to tear apart poor pop songs and make valid points on how the artists should improve, but recently, he's devolved into trying to draw people back into listening to the tripe within the genre, even going so far as to attack Indie and acoustic guitar and say that music can't be good if it's mellow and peaceful. He's lost my respect, especially for drawing people into a closed-minded attitude about music and trying to defend and proliferate an industry that doesn't need any defending or growth within its current trend and style.
