Okay, I put up a server with Bukkit and some SMP mods. Currently, it has Heroes, DistantFarm, BOSEconomy, and ChestShop for plugins.
The IP of my server is '71.235.8.78:25565' without the quotes.
To log-in you will need the following mods:
ModLoader
ModLoaderMP
MCForge
BuildCraft 2.2.11 (Download all of them)
Additional Pipes 31.4
BCIC2 Crossover 1.1.1 (Go to the old downloads sections to find 3.1.1)
IndustrialCraft2 1.4.3
RedPower2 (Download all of them)
You only need the client files!
After you finish downloading these, you will most likely get an error when starting up minecraft. To resolve these, make sure your ids for these two config files match these. DO NOT COPY AND PASTE!
EDIT: A link to all configs.
If you have other mods adding many blocks, change their item ids instead of these mods. If you do not have these posted here and the default for the other mods you will not be able to place some items.
Some mods, like Thaumcraft and EquivalentExchange do not even have a vanilla SMP version yet.

We spent two weeks on it, and had to argue a LOT to get it just right.
When you have the mods installed, start MC, you should get that error. Then when you get the .cfg files, open them with Notepad.Quote:
