Depression

Currently I have started feeling depressed. Not about this site or anything like that, but mostly about life in general. And it really doesn't have anything to do with questioning our existence or anything like that, that time passed when I passed the army-service. I now know my destiny is to work for the good of the country and- Well, that's not the point!

It's the general things in life that bother me the most. Family things and studying and work and things like that... It's either because of my nationality since it would appear to be a rather common stereotype about finns, or then I'm hitting mid-life crisis at the age of almost-21.

I would really love some advice how to defeat the general depression. A few good jokes wouldn't hurt either.

What do you do that feeds your soul? For me it's creating things. Drawing, painting and sculpting make me feel human.

Failing that, you can only distract yourself. Video games are a good way to distract yourself.

There's no point talking to anyone about it because nobody can help you, unless you have a very good friend who understands you. Friends like that are rare, though.

I'm your age (20) and sometimes I feel a little down too. Mainly because I don't know want the hell I'm going to do later in life. Which job I want to have, where I want to live (I have dual nationality). Hell, I don't even know what I want to do.

When I feel like that, I just take pleasure in the little things. I'll go play Minecraft, take a walk, or I eat outside. I'd go hang out with friends too, but I'm studying abroad and I currently don't have a lot of friends outside of my country.

It's a phase, I'm afraid. Just graduated high school, and after working a tedious job and going to college, you realize how repetitive and slow your life goes. It's really a downer and the best you could do is hang out with friends and such to escape the reality of working for a living. Personally, I'm having trouble figuring out what I'm going to do with my life since I'm so indecisive of what career I want. I guess when the time comes the answers will follow.

It has a rather limited appeal but I'm sure you'll find someone willing to pay you to do that.

Now I kinda want to stay 13..... ._.

Sitting in a dark room at night can be a haunting reminder of things, something I've think we lost as a species is the ability to look up at the stars and let our imaginations run wild, make up and share stories all around a nice warm fire around our tribe, look up see the vastness of the night sky and be reminded of the opportunity and hope for the future. Instead we all hurry off to our secluded bedrooms and let our thoughts tear us apart. Even though our day life is vastly superior to that of tribal life we might have made a trade off with night.

Although the "good" part is debatable. ;)

A question I should ask is - would you say you're genuinely depressed or just feeling very down? I've often felt very down in the past, so I know how it feels, but I would never say I was depressed per se. "Depression" is an entirely different kettle of fish. Not making light on how you feel of course.

Maturity is not an entity. It is an abstract concept devoid of life or matter. But with enough of these you could be able to kill it.

..it really is what you make of it. Get involved in a hobby or three hundred.. Some that even take you outside! You are still really young and have a ton of time to explore all sorts of wondrous things. Don't waste it!

No, it's not emo-tween-pop-song. It's actually a rather jolly, fun song about blimps. The rough translation is:

"We set off for flight on a blimp.
There were no dark clouds in the sky.
Lifted up to air, on a blimp.
We got ourselves into cloudburst
on the edge of space!"

It's a metaphor, of course. If you get it, good for you.

Anyway, it's just the small things that make me depressed. I gave up on women when I was 16, none of THEM deserved ME, so it's not likely to be caused by them. You know... Dem *****es be crazy and all that... It's not that. And here I mean no offence or disrespect to any women on this site. You ladies are fine.

The funny thing is that I still enjoy life in general. It's not as enjoyable as it was earlier in my life, though.

There is such a thing as a quarter-life crisis, which is a term coined for the depression and displacement felt by college graduates who enter a workforce that seems to hate them, or doesn't value them. But the quarter-life crisis can also refer to a trend in young adults who are struggling with a culture that rubs their faces in "freedom" and "opportunity" but gives them zero independence.

Teens and young adults now are encouraged to participate in anything and everything, but are reminded at all times that they do not get to control it. You are consumers and you yourselves are products packaged for consumption, but you don't get to profit from it or say with 100% confidence that you own what you create. That's a pretty good reason to feel depressed, but it's also dressed up in privilege and comfort so there's a feeling that you're not allowed to be depressed about it.

It doesn't help that the generations who ought to have empathy, i.e. generations now in their 30s or 40s, have no empathy whatsoever. They sneer: "Boo hoo. You silly millennials with your iPhones and your dubstep and your sad feelings. You're not real people yet!" That's another reason to feel depressed. It's quite damaging, actually: the message is that if you're a teen or young adult you should feel depressed, and that your depression is also stupid. Not a healthy mentality.

Hang in there. If it helps, know that depression is not a sign of abnormality, it's more often the normal reaction to an unhealthy or oppressive environment. It often comes down to a feeling of powerlessness and lack of control. Identifying that in itself is very difficult, and it's very difficult sometimes to make life changes or changes in perspective to overcome things. For now, it sounds like music helps a bit! That's good. And you sound like you recognize what's bugging you too, or at least that something's bugging you.

I'm not sure what cushtie life you live but I don't get free refills on my drinks. I have to pay for refills, and they're always at least 20% water.

Cheer up, mate. Pretty sure every thing's going to be fine :) . If you're still feeling depressed then try doing things that you really like. I like LBP, drawing, racing and building so doing these things usually makes me feel better after a while if I'm feeling sad.

LBP, and by association LBPCentral, probably saved my life. I'm still a bit depressed now, but LBP was probably the best thing to happen to my life when I was 12-13. Back then I could count the number of friends I had on one hand, and I was the literal bottom of the food chain at my school.

For a good while I contemplated suicide... if it wasn't for the friends I made from LBP, and you guys here at LBPC...

I don't know if I would be here right now...

Yeah, a lot of people on this site probably don't know this, but they help a lot.
When you're in a bad mood, or are depressed and you go on LBPC, and see a joke or sarcasm, it actually really DOES help.

I get anxious really easily by my health, which leads to depression. So I'll go on this site and browse about for a bit.

Something I find that helps is just doing something. You don't feel like doing anything when you're depressed, so often you'll just sit around all day. But maybe if you turn on a game, or grab a book or something, it can help get rid of your depression. It is hard to actually get your mind off of what you're depressed about, but if you can start doing an activity, you won't regret it.

Gonna be honest, never been depressed before. Sure, I've been sad (reading this thread is actually making me sad itself), but never really depressed. I heard many stories of watching funny youtube Let's Players usually gotten many people out of depression. So... try some Game Grumps I guess (Warning: Game Grumps makes mature jokes and have lots of cussing. But they are funny nonetheless).

As for jokes... I would tell you a joke, but my jokes are so bad, they once robbed a bank.
