So my mom has started dating this guy recently, who has a 7 year old son. Naturally she wants me to try and play some games with him online, since i don't live at home. we have LBP 2 naturally, but are there any other games he would understand well enough to play online with me.
my mom and i both have playstation plus, so free playstation plus games are welcomed
i had them download Dungeon Defenders, but im not sure if he is gonna be able to play it.

Castle Crashers is a simple co-op 2D beat 'em up, although it has mild cartoon violence.
I want to suggest Trine, but I don't know if he'll understand the mechanics... However, it's perfectly possible to beat the game playing solo, so in theory you should be able to do all the work while he prances around.
For PS3, I'd get the Sly Collection and Outland. They're both good games for all ages and are a lot of fun to play through.
If you have a Wii, then I'd try looking up "Klonoa Wii," "Kirby's Return to Dreamland," or "Zack and Wiki: The Quest for Barbaros' Treasure." I haven't played any of them, but they've all gotten good reviews and would probably be good choices. I hear Zack and Wiki can be very tricky sometimes with its puzzles though, but the other games are considered pretty easy. (Although Klonoa's also pretty short according to reviewers, so maybe Kirby would be the best choice of the three. Although, you can Klonoa real cheap from Gamestop.)
If you guys have a DS or a 3DS, the Pokemon games are great to go for, as is the Professor Layton series. Besides that, the iPhone has some fun games like Contre Jour, Doodle Jump, Rolando and Rolando 2, plus you can get the Fancy Pants Adventures, an amazing game for iPhone and PS3. The iPhone version is cheaper, and still very responsive, but maybe a big screen experience would be more enjoyable if you decide to pick it up.

Take a look at TMNT III: Turtles in Time, another game where he'll connect with the brand. It is more difficult, however. I also agree with the suggestion for Castle Crashers, which is definitely very easy and fun, but as mentioned it has some cartoon violence and scatalogical humor. Both of these are cooperative side scrolling beat 'em ups. If you like them, see also: The Simpsons Arcade Game, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. Same price range, same gameplay.
Trine and Trine 2 are more platformer/puzzle. Very easy for a practiced gamer, can't speak for a child. The game has infinite lives and a nice RPG-like upgrade system. You can shepherd him through most of it, I imagine, similar to LEGO Star Wars and Castle Crashers.
I haven't played it but Ratchet and Clank All 4 One is an all-ages full coop game, and free to PS+ members.
Finally, just remembering experiences with my own son before he turned 10, Peggle is addictive fun and has a random element to it that makes multiplayer kind of a tossup, for better or worse. Limited replay value for multiplayer, though, and ultimately a Flash/mobile game that costs a whole lot compared to its App Store counterpart.
For PS3 I suggest Ratchet and Clank, Sonic Adventure 2 (downloadable game), and LEGO games (as arbiekko said).
For Wii I'd get Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2, Mario Kart Wii, and Sonic and the Black Knight.
For DS I suggest Sonic Rush, Pokemon, and Mario Kart DS.

A bit "out there", but how about something like Flower or Journey? Flower has simplistic controls, plus he may like the novelty of controlling it with the sixaxis. It may get a bit difficult for him towards the end, but lets be honest... young gamers today have it too easy! Not like us who grew up with Mega Drive (ie Genesis) games and older. :p
Give him something challenging! There's also Quantum Conundrum, which has the cartoony graphics and humour which he will enjoy (I don't think there's any bad language in it), plus it will give him a good challenge, plus it will give you the opportunity to bond whilst trying to work the puzzles out. :)
PixelJunk Monsters. Seriously. It's a tower defense game, but it's 2 player compatible and it's absolutely fun.
Pretty much, the reason why my best friend was my best friend was because of that game.
