Android tracking conspiracy and stuff

Well, I'm a bit creeped out. I was out a field trip today and got to try out a VR headset, which I posted about on Instagram on my Android phone (Moto X), with the comment "me trying out a VR headset".

Now, half of my Google Now cards are news articles on the Oculus Rift, and they claim to show up because of "recently read articles," despite the fact that I have not read any articles on that subject recently.

Perhaps I'm wrong, but I do find it rather creepy. Enjoy the food for thought.

I have Nokia Lumia, so it would actually require the internet to work properly before I could suffer from it transferring data.

Whether we like it or not personal information is commodity and an extremely valuable one at that. It's the reason things like Facebook exist, almost genius really creating a business where people are actually eager to share their entire life, essentially a self perpetuating database of not just what to market to you but how as well. If anyone were to take the time to actually read the terms and conditions we all blindly accept to, buried somewhere inside would be a section about what personal information is collected and how it is used.

There was a change in policy at Google some time ago from unbiased search results to tailored results. I leave the implications of that in a situation like an upcoming election to you.

All mobile phones are tracking devices by virtue of always looking for a better tower.

Smartphones are even worse. The Snowden documents revealed iPhones at least can be remotely activated to dump all their contents with "100% success rate".

This is why I installed a custom rom and turned off the gps. I refuse to use google maps as well.

Call me paranoid, but there ARE a lot of people that would be out to get your information. Thank god that you atleast can see what packages make up your OS on android... though I'd bet that the hardware bios is the real thing to watch out for.

They don't need GPS to find your location... they can use triangulation or something. Also anything made by Google is automatically a data-collecting stalker device...because all Google wants is more data.

Yep, like Ayneh mentioned, phones are always looking for the nearest communication tower. Time the latency of at least three towers*, a bit of simple maths and bob's your uncle, you've located the phone.
*Two towers can work as well only there would be two possible positions you could be at.

I've always felt like punching someone who works at Google in the face for supporting horrible business practices.
