What do you guys think of the band?
When I started getting into Metal (around the same time I got GH2) I liked Metallica, but after honing my guitar and drum skills and listening to bands like Tool and Megadeth, I realized they really aren't that good. Their songs have pretty unoriginal riffs, Lars is a crappy drummer, Kirk Hammet is a mediocre guitar player and all his solos are pretty much the same, and I'm tired of noob kids who only know Enter Sandman and Battery because they're on videogames.

Well, the most important thing to realize here is that everything said in this thread is going to be an opinion, it's all subjective.
I do agree with you on some points. I wouldn't say Lars sucks, sure he's not the best but he doesn't suck. And also you cant compare the technical expertise really otherwise you are going to miss out on some good bands.
Example, Nirvana's riffs are usually quite simple but they are catchy and cool. I actually happen to really like the older Metallica's guitar parts. I think they're rhythm / lead in some songs are just beautiful. Like "One," or "Fade To Black." And ya, Kirk deff isn't the best either and ya he does have a lot of similar solos. He almost always does this one bend where the "b" string is held stationary and you hit the "d" and bend it up. He does that like three times pretty quickly.
And seems to always do a triplet pentatonic pattern (from beginning to end). I would agree I think they do lack some creativity, although they had quite a bit it just seems they are limited. But I wouldn't say they suck

I'll agree with you that they are about average musicians and they do have pretty basic riffs, but if you look at it from the sound of their songs, I think they're (mostly) awesome. So, forgetting how hard the songs are to play, 'Master of Puppets' and 'Ride The Lightning' are my favourites (both have basic riffs). It's not because of video games that I like Metallica either; I (personally) think that Enter Sandman is a good song, but over-rated.
I have heard before about them using parts from other musicians songs but I don't know much about that.

Oh mate! I feel so sorry for you. Seriously
It souns like you are heading down a slippery slope towards a phenomenon I like to call "Metal Musician Snobery Syndrome". MMSS often afflicts talented muscisians who start getting into metal and start noticing the wealth of staggering technical talent that exists in metal music. Blown away by this they start looking for more technical stuff and honing their own skills. All of this is fine - improving your skills is a good thing and I commend you. But you've gone a step further and are starting to talk like technical expertise is what makes music is about. You carry on down this slope and you will end up like a couple of my friends, who are unable to listen to anything that isn't technical metal.
They are missing out. Music is an art form, and it's unbelieveable varied. Some of the most artistic music out there is really simple and basic, that's how art works. If you strip an art form down to technical evaluation, you lose all of the beauty of it - you may as well be writing an equation. As hamsalad said, you are the one who going to miss out.
I think metallica as a band are pretty good. Their songs sound kinda cool and they sure as hell do know how to put on a good show. I've never been a major fan and they probably are overrated. But remember why you used to enjoy the sound of their music, and stop picking it apart. Oh and stop exaggerating, they definately don't "suck"

You forget that technical skill can also form originality. Plus, I don't hate Metallica because they're bad at their instruments. I think their riffs are unoriginal. I don't hate music because of simplicity, except rap, and I like music because of how hard it is to play. I also like Iron Maiden, but Niko McBrain or whatever is a pretty mediocre drummer himself, although his fills are pretty good. It's just Lars plays almost the same thing in every song. I would say that technically, And Justice for All is their best album (or at least Lars's) but I still hate it.Oh mate! I feel so sorry for you. Seriously

How about you start reading posts? I never said they suck. I said they aren't that good. Especially not as good as people make them out to be. I like the sound of music. I like Tool because they sound very unique, like a weirder version of Alice in Chains. My favorite songs are their most simple songs.
The Four Horsemen
Fade to Black
For Whom The Bell Tolls
Sanitarium
Call of Ktulu.
I never said they suck. There is nothing special about them, though, however they did influence a lot, and I'll give them that. If anything, I just really hate Lars and how he talks like everything he says is the most important thing ever.

Metallica
I am now at the stage where i prefer them to Maiden, and that's saying something. Never insult them again! >_<
'nuff said.
I mean, you can call them over-rated or whatever you want to say, but that does not take away from the fact they ARE one of the biggest bands in the world. And i'm sorry, but you can't get to that point by being overrated with a crappy drummer, average guitarists and boring riffs.
YOU don't see anything in them, but i guess the millions of fans would see it differently?
And so what if the 'noob kids' only know 2 songs? if it get's them into Metallica and other similar music where is the problem in that? My first Metallica song i liked was Enter Sandman. I now have every album they have ever made, along with about 35 live albums i got from livemetallica.com.
Yes it's all opinion, but as i said, it's a fact that they are one of the biggest bands ever. They have millions of fans and as i said, you don't get that from being crap.

Chill out mate, if you read back my post it's not all that critical of you and I have no intention of having a fight with you (I won't be here to respond even if I did). It's a far more general critisism of how people become when they start being really snobbish about these things. And you sounded a little snobbish, saying you're tired of people who are exactly how you were 2 (3?) years ago. Will you be tired of people who are like yourself now, in two years time?
As I said, metallica aren't the most amazing band in the world but they aren't boring. At worst they are a bit samey. You used to like the sound of their music before you picked it apart, is what I infer from your comments. Does it actually sound different now? Or are you just breaking it down more?
I also don't really think that the personality of an artist should influence your opinion of their art, even if he is an arrogant tossbag! I understand that comment may have just been a sindnote, I don't know if it is part of your changed attitiude towards the band.
And I'm sorry I used the word "suck" - I paraphrased

No, my tastes changed. Bush is simple too but I like them. Think about it: I liked them when I first got into metal. It's like if you ate poop all your life you would like poop until you tried some cheese and you would think cheese is better. If you know about Dave Mustaine, you would know that I certainly don't like him for his personality. As I said, metallica aren't the most amazing band in the world but they aren't boring. The noob kids I'm talking about act like they like Metallica but still don't know any of the songs. They've been calling themselves fans for the whole school year. One time I asked this kid what his favorite Metallica song was and he said Enter Sandman. I asked him if he knew any others and he said no. And now that RB2 came out his favorite song is Battery. These aren't kids who just like Enter Sandman, they say they like Metallica but they don't, and that kind of ****** me off. If you have never heard Fade To Black or any of their less known gems like Four Horsemen or Of Wolf and Man, then you really can't call yourself that. I'm not talking about someone who just found out about Metallica and metal and started to like it. Most bands popular songs aren't their best. Has anyone ever heard of Judas be my Guide? Yet, it's my favorite Iron Maiden song.Metallica

A band can't get popular without being good? Are you kidding me? Ever heard Brittney Spears?? Ever heard Blink 182? Yes, mediocre musicians, but popular no doubt. There are even bands who are hired by record companies and then they hire professionals to play on the album for them. So saying that someone can't be crappy and get popular is completely wrong. While people have to like their music, they don't have to be good at their instrument.Last edited by Awesomemans; 06-09-2009 at 11:07 PM.

Let's keep this civilized, not pointing at anyone and not saying it isn't civilized, just a friendly reminder.
