Sony will tell you the same thing Microsoft told me when my Xbox broke

Remove the HDD, send in PS3, and when the refurbished one comes, put your HDD in...

Also, I hope you're in warranty, Sony customer support BLOWS... simply put

    I feel you (while you're asleep )

My PS3 broke a while back. Only had it for a year too.

You will get over it, though. You will get a better PS3, and with it, you shall rule!

Come to think of it, I've never owned a Sony-made/developed product that's ever broken to the point of unusability...

My original PS1 got stolen when my home was burglarized in the first grade (b&stards got mah Spyro 2), and my PS2 is currently being loaned to a friend...

Oh, I forgot to mention that I've owned this PS2 since launch day
Best 300 bucks I [my parents] have ever spent... :P

My first Xbox broke during the introduction cutscene to Bioshock (ULTRA-RAGE)
My second Xbox broke while walking through the ruined train yard in Fallout 3 >
My third Xbox broke the night of Title Update 3 for Gears 2 (my all-time favorite Xbox game)

I have yet to muster up the will-power to ship it back in :/

Seeing as how Mass Effect 2 on the PS3 is pretty much a given at this point, the only hope for my Xbox is ODST...

That sucks to hear, man, but you'll probably have worse days. Actually, I spend hours on mine everyday so if I got the YLOD it would probably be the worst day of my life, too.

Just wondering: how do you switch it off? Do you turn it off from the controller/XMB/front? Or do you just flick the switch at the back?

Owch. Reminds me of my old PSN (Stickville). LBP froze, impatience led to force shut-off, all saved data was corrupted... and so was my PSN. I haven't got YLOD yet, but, since my PS3 was used and I got it about a year and a half ago (for a very "late" Christmas present in February... curse you, Mr.Nintendofactoryfire), I'll probably get it soon enough.

(Keep your filters clean. And your wiring. And your controller ports. And everything else that can potentially get dirt inside of. A clean PS3 leads to a clean performance.)

Now that's advice everyone can live by

Anyway, I checked on various forums and the general consensus is:
The hard drive is encrypted. Each hard drive is married to each PS3, because each PS3 has it's own encryption key that it uses to encrypt the entire drive. That's why your old drive wouldn't work in your new PS3.
    So yeah, encrypted it is.

The better PS3 doesn't exist anymore. It was the 60gig launch model.
