Default For someone planning on making Mario based levels...

I had an idea but, I don't intend on building an SMB themed level so, I thought I'd throw this idea out there for anyone interested in that or any other relevant levels.

From what I understand, the largest level size will be an IMMENSE square. SMB has 8 levels with 3 sections each ( 1-1,1-2,1-3,2-1... etc ). I was thinking that the massively sized level can be split into 8 rows and 3 columns.

The idea here is to get the whole SMB1 into one level on LBP so as to save slots for other levels. Each row would represent each level and each column would represent the sections of each level.

Here's what the whole stage would look like...

    [ 1-1 ][ 1-2 ][ 1-3 ]
    [ 2-1 ][ 2-2 ][ 2-3 ]
    [ 3-1 ][ 3-2 ][ 3-3 ]
    [ 4-1 ][ 4-2 ][ 4-3 ]
    [ 5-1 ][ 5-2 ][ 5-3 ]
    [ 6-1 ][ 6-2 ][ 6-3 ]
    [ 7-1 ][ 7-2 ][ 7-3 ]
    [ 8-1 ][ 8-2 ][ 8-3 ]

One major question is gonna be, how do you get from stage 1-3 to 2-1. After the boss fight, you'd have the obligatory 'the duchess is in another fort' (trying to stay copyright free) and you could end it with a pipe. The pipe would be in a background layer and would drop onto a fast moving conveyor belt that would span the entire map all the way back to the beginning where you would be dropped into the beginning of 2-1(unless they introduce teleporting which would be TONS easier!).

You may not be able to get all eight levels in there but, here's hoping... ya know? Basically, the hardest part is getting the piping system for 'warping' to other levels figured out.

I, for one, will not be building any SMB levels because, I know that LBP will be flooded with a ton of them but, I would like to encourage anyone who is interested in doing so do use this method if it helps/works.

Comments? Thoughts? Suggestions? Go for it! I'd love to hear 'em all.

If you wanted to fit all the levels onto one, why not have them as keys on the main level, so when they finish one, they move onto the next key, which takes them to the corresponding level?

I don't fully understand the key thing. Isn't the key thing just a switch type that has to stay in the level? At least, that's what I understood from the manual.

Yeah I thought the keys was given at teh end and than that can be use to unlock a new level. But I think this is talking about trying to put all of Mario in one level. I don't think this is totally possible but I guess if you change it to make it happen than that would work

I'm a huge mario fan and I like the idea but i think this is too big a project for one massive level. Plus you forgot the castle levels which adds another 8 sections and some of the levels near the end of the game are quite long. The way I'm planning on doing is just linking a bunch of mario themed levels together and having one massive level at the end with an assortment of classic mario moments.

Love the idea just think its too much content to squeeze into one level

I agree, I think either each world should be a level, with a key at the end linking it to the next world, or maybe even each section being its own level, with keys at the end of each linking it to the next section. This is a really cool idea for other kinds of levels, though.

For instance, design your own level and at the end make it look like an obvious finish for a level, then once you complete it there is a vehicle, tube, conveyer ect. that goes below the level and brings you back to the start of a second level that you could then go on and complete.

Again, keys would pretty much work the same way, and you would just make each part actually be seperate levels, but it is an interesting idea and in some levels might look and feel really cool.

Man... I thought I remembered the castle levels as being the 3rd level in each... I must be getting old cause, I can't remember. But, yeah... I was thinking of making a full platform game with that type of structure but, I'm not ambitious enough to attempt to recreate Mario... especially seeing as how I don't fully remember the game and it's levels :-p

    Why not creatively use pipes...

More symbolic than actually functional for transitions from zone to zone inside your level.

So start from the very top of your canvas and just drop down thru pipes...this way it feels like a Mario game.

Yeah that would be a good idea, but how do you go up pipes? Like how I understand you want to start top left and go through each level in mario in one LBP level, but the problem I see is that mario goes from inside to outside alot so you would have to make the levels vertical not horizontal and just use the pipes to switch from inside to outside. It is tricky and also you have the water levels also. If it is pulled off that would be cool.

Very ambitious ... nice idea, but possibly a little too large to produce effectively.

I think the first problem is that not all the levels are equal length. This means that they may not line up correctly and you may be hard pushed to fit them all in. I'd like to see it done though.

I like the idea of taking the Best set pieces from the 2D mario levels and turning them into one SUPER LEVEL!

Yeah, I can see that last idea, if it were well-made, being quite fun. With other LBP twists thrown in, of course. (Think: Mario set-pieces, WITH physics puzzles at the same time! Don't just hop on that Hammer-Throwing Ninja, launch yourself with an orange to fly well over its range and land directly on the head! And etc.)

Or maybe, since it'd really be overkill to have every stage of world its own, with its own keys and all, you could instead make each world one level. Meaning it'd be manageable in a creative format, and more accessible from a playthrough standpoint. So you would not be forced to go through the entire SMB game to finish, especially if you had a friend wanting to play with you but you're in level 5-2 and want to finish it, but it'll take however longer...

Other note: If the entire game-in-one-level level is made, make some sort of transport, eh? Like an elevator to take you from the top to whatever world you want.

What I was thinking is, you start off at one point, theres a 8 pipes to go through, above each pipe is the World and Section, You start off with the only open pipe 1-1, the rest are locked, at the end of 1-1 You get a key, you jump on a conveyor or something, takes you all the way back and you go through the second pipe, the problem with that is the layering, which I still don't quite understand but, I hope this opens up ideas.

this should be easy to make, because all you have to do is copy and paste boxes and the desgin is basic, but i could not do im rubbish at art lol, but how are you got to get the right scale, also how are you going to do the enimies.

you could make it so that when you hit the boxes when you are jumping a point comes out

the boss battle should be easy enough, but their one probelm copyrights, you might what to change somethings so you wont get sue or just only let friend use it.

it seems every one wanted to make super mario level, i was plannin on taking the mick out of it for mentally unstable,

Enemies would be simple. For Goombas, just put down a 3 layer-thick mushroom shape and attach wheels to it to move it back and forth. Then put an outline of toxic gas around the shape's edges. Add some googly-eyes, a vicious grin, and a brain on its head, and wala.

    ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

good, problem number two is the bosses, is this going to be completey the same, if it is then how are you going to give bosses more then one live, because in a fottage i have seen the bosses can only get hit once

That's not a bad idea... but didn't MM already state that they will remove copyrighted levels. ( Super Mario is copyrighted ) I hope they don't because this sounds like a lot of fun.

Well, actually, as long as you don't reference anything DIRECTLY from Mario, such as Mario stickers or anything, they couldn't take it off. You could just make the level out of LBP materials and make similar, yet not exactly the same enemies.
