I was roaming around the LBPC threads, looking at all the wonderful posts, when I stumbled across a couple of threads that were basically showcases for an artist's music.
"Well, that's a limited conversation", thought I.
Wouldn't it be nice to expand on that a little, and make a thread to show-off all the musical talent lurking around here.
And so, Viola!
A thread for posting music that you create, and discussions about The creation of music, and the inspirations to create music.
Now, a word of admonishment; You are free to post as you see fit, of course.
I would, however, loathe to see this thread degenerate into a debate over one type of music's superiority over another.
That being said...
Welcome to
BTW- if you are looking for a place to upload your stuff, here are a few places that we've found. if any one knows of one that they find particularly good, let me know and I'll post it here:
__FREE AUDIO HOSTING__
Sound cloud: My PS3 Doesn't like this site much. it can't press the play button for some reason.
http://soundcloud.com/
NewGrounds: Not bad over all. If you ignore all the rating nonsence and general competitive stupidity that wanders around in it. there are also alot of flash proggies to try out and rate. if you like.
http://www.newgrounds.com/
The Audio Portal: Is a Flegling offshoot of Newgrounds made by a group of people who had gotten fed up with the general mood of Newgrounds.

pitcard - "I think bandcamp is just as good as soundcloud... but maybe thats not what you're looking for. Its more for showcasing your tracks/albums and have very nifty ways of selling tracks etc..."

Well, I play guitar, but I haven't really written anything of my own yet, and even if I had I'm not sure I would record it and post it on the interwebz anyway...
THAT SAID, this thread sounds like a great idea and I hope it takes off for you.Ultimate Bundle achieved thanks to Burnvictim42.

Yeah, it is a bit surprising that there isn't a thread like this out there somewhere... Oh, well. I'll get out now, seeing as I'm being quite off-topic here. Good luck once again.

Wow, this is a great thread! Thanks for telling me about it, Swan, and I must say, your compositions are fantastic! They're also rather psychedelic, but may I ask how you got some of the music samples from the level music? Or did you have to recreate them yourself?
As for me, well, I've but up two here already...I'm doing another one atm but meh, I'll post it here later. I do all the instruments myself...

I had listened to Overcast before and loved it...I just finished listening to Effulgence. It Made my fingers twitch!
It might be fun to get some track-swapping going on, if this thread gets some regulars.
As for the game music, I was able to filter out the play mode-hum from some of it like the sitar, and some of the drums. Other parts, like the piano part, it was just easier and faster to play myself, even if I didn't play it verbatim.
Since it was one of the inter-active tracks I really didn't have to sift through much at all to get the parts I wanted to work with.
Plus, they were kind enough to record it at exactly 105 bpm, so That's always nice.Last edited by swanbrown; 08-17-2009 at 10:05 PM.

Hey swan man. Thanks for the invite!
Here's a fairly difficult song that I won a $2,000 scholarship with a few years ago. (I did not write this, but I did change a few things about it that I didn't like...Yeah, I know that's probably grounds for a flogging, but whatever, that's how I roll.)
Please don't mind the title. I did that solely to generate more views on youtube.

I have a BUNCH of stuff I've written. Some of it is serious, but a lot of it is humorous, (intentionally). I'll post some of that maybe when this thread gets going more.

I think they are pretty good, the second tune would even fit for a LBP tune imho!
Would you care to tell how you've made this?
(whenever i hear someone talking about music, i'm always interested to hear how it's made and what you've used)
cheers,

here are some links of some of my sound design experiments, well... more noise-experiments
It's not music, just stuff i like to fool around with.
What you are hearing are called "noodles", self playing modular structures that produce sound. (lots of math and algebra involved)
Everything is made from scratch on a modular system (clavia G2) with sound synthesis (no samples used).

Noodles and my self- absorbed ramblings
@ KoRnDawwg
The Dynamics of your first post are really, really nice! I know a lot of musicians that feel they have to burn from bar one. It's not so common to find someone like you who can set up an interesting flow. What do you record on? What do you use for tracking and mix?
@ ApellesJr:
That is beautiful! It's like Manhiem Steam Roller, Geroge Gershwin, and Claude Debusy rolled into one piece! It's atrists like you that hold me in awe. When ever I start to get too cocky about my music, I can just give this a listen and things will be put back into perspective for me! lol. How long had you been playing when you recorded this?
@ mother-misty:
Zounds! Gadzooks! holy-moly! That's unreal!
As far as it not being music, I'd disagree emphatically! It evokes an emotional reaction through non-verbal audio. Seems like music to me.
I have never heard of Noodles before now. what do you use to make them? Is it rendered in individual samples? This is a gem of an addition to this thread, Thanks!.
The first is my favorite of the three, but is closely followed by the other two. Do they have names? Man! I wanna Play with your stuff (that didn't sound right, but I think I'll leave it).
I used to have a guy who would come around, and play around with my proggies and equipment, just to see how much weird sound he could produce. He claimed not to be a musician, but he could make my machines do things I would have never thought of! Your attitude twards your noodles (again, an awkward phrase), reminds me a lot of him.

I'm always happy to ramble on about making music. I tend to be a little egocentric when it comes to my tunes.
Spoiler - Temples re-mix
Temples remix was a pretty straight forward exercise in dubbing parts of the LBP interactive track "temples" into Magix music maker, and laying down some sequenced tracks.
The Piano part, and some of the tabla parts from the game had a bunch of back-ground stuff I didn't really want, so I ended up playing the piano part via MIDI, and splicing the crap out of the tabs and crew shout "hey!".
The sequenced arpeggios, I made with a VST sequencer that came with Magix. Some of the additional percussion, I pulled from my library of loops. I don't really remember what I used to make it. Possibly Propeller Heads' Reason. It's possible I didn't make it at all, but I usually don't like to use dry public domain.
It was just a quick little thing to promote my level, so I didn't go far from my main apps to do it, and it ends where it ends on the vid. Actually that little broken blip at the end of the vid is an artifact of utube, but I like it and think I'll start simulating it.
Spoiler - Throw down with Laurell and Hardy
Throw-down, I did for no reason at all, save for being inspired by the little dance Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy did in "Way Out West". In the original footage, you can really feel the affection those two men had for each other, and their audience. I'm afraid I may have lost some of that effect here (especially in the first part).
I used a lot of different synths and effects. A lot of it started from an Alesis keyboard, but is heavily processed. I also used fruity-loops and buzz for a lot of effects and synths. I arranged the video along-side the song, bar-for-bar, so sometimes the action dictated the tune, and sometimes vice-versa.
Apart from format conversions, I used Magix for the video and audio sync, and Video wave5 for the final mix-down.
I couldn't be more thrilled about the variety of music collected so far in this thread. I love to mix it up, and this is great! Now, If only we had some hang-drummers, over-tone singers, and mouth-harp artists to add to the mix!
"if only" ? Who am I kidding?
If I got them on this thread, I'd be saying "now, if only we had some one playing a nose-flute, and a circuit bending artist."
I call this "vinny's guitar",but don't be fooled, it's actually my guitar work (and the other stuf around it)

I liked these. In college I was big into sound design as well. "modular-synthesis" was the big thing back then. Probably best described as sound on a microscopic cellular level. Building sounds timbre from scratch.
Here's some of my stuff. It's out on a Japanese label which is the Japanese division of Prefuse 73's label. When I get off my **** I send it out to other labels hopefully it'll be available in Europe and the U.S. too in the not too distant future.

Been writin' about 15 years... tracks are very old (2004 ish), but I still write, record with different people I run into, and always plan on getting back into it.
I did this stuff with a laptop, a tiny $3 voice chat microphone (held in place with a roll of toilet paper and a knotted up tank top), and a demo of cool edit pro... so quality is meh, and I can do alot more vocally than I was able to record (any audible emoting = static, bad levels).
There are some other even older tracks mixed in on my old soundclick page too - http://www.soundclick.com/bands/page...m?bandID=43283Last edited by NinjaMicWZ; 08-19-2009 at 05:35 PM.
