Default Joe Snow's Mountain!!! - Now with video!

    Joe Snow's Mountain!!! by Shebhnt
Welcome to Joe Snow's Mountain! Can you overcome the challenges to make it to the top? But watch out, there is someone who wants to make it as hard on you as possible!

Can you climb the mountain? You have to first get up the cliff using some ninja sackboy skills, then survive the abandoned mine. After that you have to make it up the hill while avoiding the yellow snow. Then there is the final climb up the face of the mountain. All the while Joe Snow is there to pop up and land a helping hand, well if he had hands. But keep an eye out, there seems to be somebody who doesn't want you to get to the top!

This is now the beginning of a little series, the next one will be Rick Rock's Cave. I will post more information on it as I start to get more progress done in the Ideas and Projects section so keep an eye out!

Hey guys! This is my first "real" level (not a survival, race, etc). I have worked really hard on making it a fun level while also sticking with a single theme. I challenged myself to make something that was fun to explore but at the same time challenging. Please give me any feedback you can so that I can work on my level making techniques.

Here is a video play through thanks to Memodrix:

    Some more screenshots:

Also Thanks to ObsoleteXeo for the video review!

PS I know this isn't F4F, mostly because I can't play daily, but I will try and give feedback to anyone who does mine.

Well done, a really good first 'real' level as you put it! We had a fun climb up that mountain with just the right amount of challenge and just the right length. The scenery integrated with the background really nicely and it generally looked good - the snow on the top of the rock was great.

In terms of gameplay we particularly liked the yellow snow section (although it was hard... and some of your proximity switches might be set a bit wide!) and the lights flashing on and off in the mine section added really well to the atmosphere (something not often seen in first levels). The torch was a good idea, but we played two player and found it kind of hard to handle and because it was dark we kept squashing each other next to it!

Overall a really good effort. In future maybe you could consider using all 3 layers to give it more depth? You clearly have some good level making skills, and I think that making use of all the layers would really enhance these skills. This is your best work yet, and we were really pleased to see that you have asked for feedback to work on your techniques.

  3. Thanks!

Yeah, I played this the other day. Sorry I didn't comment earlier. That being said, my memory of it is somewhat foggy.
For a first real level it was good. Probably a better effort than mine, because it wasn't depressingly difficult and was challenging enough to still be fun.
I liked how you decided to use a flashlight in the mine. However, it was somewhat pointless as every obstacle emitted light. I was expecting it to have some actual use. The mines also felt very... uh... not-miney. I dunno but I feel like you could have had things that actually appear in mines, like carts, lifts, and caving-in tunnels.
The mountain was fun to climb up overall. It took me a while to figure out that the yellow snow was triggering the avalanches, but the avalanches were well done.
Also, I suggest when making enemies, make them a bit more inspired than red, uh, things with spikes. You said you were sticking with a single theme, but they didn't seem to fit that theme. What I did like about them, though, was that I always seemed to underestimate them and get myself killed.
    Joe Snow was awesome.

  5. Thanks!

Thank you both for your comments and your plays, I'm glad you both had fun!

    Adipose:
Thanks for the advice, I do find myself not to focused on how it will play out with multiple people in it. I'll work on that on my next levels, maybe add in some multiplayer challenges. I also have never really played around with using all three layers but you are right, it could add a whole new depth to my levels and gameplay. Thank you always for your advice and for playing all the levels I've made so far!

    JellyWeasel:
Yeah, the tunnel was a learning experience, when I first made it, the challenges in there I thought weren't too hard till I had my roommates play through it and found out nobody could figure them out. I simplified them a lot to the versions you play now. I think though I am going to make a full mine level and really figure out how to use the flash light idea to it's fullest potential.

Once again, thank you both for the plays! And when I get a chance I will try out a new level by you Adipose and yours JellyWeasel!

    pretty fun no real downers,
the yellow snow part was tricky but fun
i did see all your dark matter when i was swinging on clouds which is never a good look but u probably reached the level border i figure so u cudnt move higher? i had same problem in my level. also i would suggest practicing and playing with the corner editor to make shapes with. it can really improve the design of your landscape!
    hope thats ok

Thanks, I plan on doing some updating tonight with the few hours I can play. I'll work on hiding the dark matter and triple check the proximity switches for the yellow snow. I can't seem to find a good balance to where they detect too much or they detect too little.

    JUST finished!
Your level looks really good! I like the visual style and the details you add.
The platforming was fun; not too easy, not too tricky, just right. I really wasn't sure if I was going to make the jump early on from one grab to another, but the distance was *perfect*. The cave section was cool, but my flashlight broke in one of the electric wheels and I had to go back and grab another! It was funny though, I didn't mind at all. The yellow snow made me laugh, and it took me two or three tries to figure out what was going on with the avalanche. The grab wheels nearer to the end were done well; I can't stand the Sensei's Lost Castle level in story mode, but your's were far more reasonable. And the parachute ride at the end was nice.

I couldn't ever hear what Joe said as I was about to enter the cave; there's another voice box there, and try as I might, that was always the one to activate, so I'm not sure what he said before I entered the cave.

    I had fun. Good level!

  13. Thanks!

So I played this level awhile ago but I never got around to writing up a review. I've since forgotten all my original comments so I decided to go back and play it again since I remembered having fun. I'm writing this as I go...

    - The red, spikey enemies seem really out of place on a snowy mountain. Something else closer to the theme would help the immersion. On the same note, why are their robots popping up?
    - Right before you swing to the left, Joe will continue to jump out everytime you walk by, perhaps having him stay up, or just pop out once might be better.
    - The "mine" felt more like a hallway. If you just made the floors somewhat uneven it would help.
    - I liked the elevator with the lighting, although the red button seemed a odd. Even if the switch was just changed to a lever it would feel more natural.
    - With the jump pad, if I go straight up and down I land on the arrow and then have to maneuver around it to get back down. Possibly embedding the arrow in the layer behind would help.
-The magic mouth before the parachute stops you from continuing the point combo.
-The parachute was pretty cool. Think about putting in some point bubbles so we have something to aim for.
    - Ok, the joke about the robots at the end did make me laugh because of my earlier comment.

Hopefully this didn't sound too harsh, because I did enjoy the level even the second time through. I've seen you post quite a bit, always asking questions, so I figured you could take some constructive criticism. You seem to be going in the right direction and will certainly improve. I will definitely play your next level.

  19. Thanks!

Thanks for the comment, I will go back in and add in those point bubbles on the parachute down. I'm glad you caught the robot reference at the end, I was worried people would miss it. I was thinking of also going back and messing with the ground/ceiling in the mind but the flashlight requires a smooth surface to move it. Also will work on those arrows!

Thank you as I am always looking for criticism on how I can become better! I really do read all of these and take them to heart!

I guess when I said mine I really meant the entrance and exit paths. I didn't notice or mind the flat surface during the flashlight part.

And I don't have a published level yet, so you're off the hook for now.

Hi, I'm here because of F4F on my level Puzzle World (thanks!)

My first impressions were that the visuals seemed very basic, however once you enter the mine they become a lot better. The gameplay is unnaffected though, and is very good. The snowman is funny, especially the arms joke

We kept getting crushed by crushers we couldn't see, an infinite life checkpoint is definatly needed before them. We couldn't see the rest of the level because of this, sorry

    +Fun gameplay
    +Impressive Mine visuals
    -Unimpressive outside visuals
    -Needs infinate life checkpoints.

  24. Thanks!

Ok, I will add in the infinite checkpoint. I hate dying on a level when you are so far in that you don't want to play it again.
