Default How To Avoid Distorted Avatars And Level Patches When Using Custom Stickers

    Introduction

N.B. This only applies to level badges when viewed in LBP1. Both LBP2 and lbp.me leave the aspect ratio unchanged.

This came up some time ago on the LBW forums, but I haven't seen it mentioned here, and it's very useful, so here goes.

You might have noticed that when you try to use a custom sticker (excluding PS Eye images) as an avatar or level patch, it gets squished in the horizonal axis. This is because custom stickers have a 16:9 aspect ratio, but avatar and level patches have a 1:1 aspect ratio. Fortunately, there's an easy way around this.

    Method

Let's assume you want to use the following image as your avatar or level patch...

    It's.... me! Hurrah!

    1. Go into Create Mode.
    2. Turn on Small Grid mode.
    3. Create a one layer thick block of Dark Matter, 8 units wide by 4 units high.
    4. Change the brush to a 1x1 size, go to the middle of the second row just above the center, and cut away the 2 innermost squares in a horizontal line.
    5. You should now have a shape that looks like...

    The Aspect Ratio Correction Block

    6. Leaving Small Grid mode on, when place your custom sticker in the middle of this shape, it exactly snaps to the right angle to stretch it to a 16:9 ratio.

    Where's my head?

    7. Now fill in the hole, and change the material to cardboard or glass, or whatever material you prefer for taking pictures on.

    I'm all stretchy

    8. Switch to Front View and take your photo.

    It worked!

Now when you use this photo as either an avatar or level patch, it should look exactly correct. Note that there will be some quality loss when you take a photo of a photo, but it might be preferable to squishy pictures - the choice is yours.

Hmmmm, I just use a square of rubber then corner edit out, pretty sure the hole in the middle does the same thing. Thats how my avatar on LBP looks so poifect

I was gonna post this, but I couldn't find the link to give credit and then I forgot about it. Is something a lot of people will benefit from I'm sure.

Yep. The link to the original thread suggests a similar method, I just found it too hard to get the right angle with grid mode off, so this makes it a lot easier.

I don't see how that helps with aspect ratio correction.

I assume he zooms in so far that you can't see any details.... then aspect ratio becomes a moot point

Lemme get this straight though. Making a hole and the filling it in glitches the photo so that the proportions change?

Rtm could you explain your method? I didn't quite get what you're on about

    Ahh. Yes. That's much easier.

You should read the original LBW thread I linked to in the first post. It's more the fact that placing a sticker on the edge of a material causes it to stretch to various different ratios, depending on exactly where you place it. The hole in the middle approach just allows the same trick to work in grid mode, and always selects the correct ratio. It's just a fortunate coincidence.

I assumed he meant the original method I linked to in the first post, but I could be wrong.

Yeah is pretty much the method in the linked post. I think. I did it from memory and just hacked around until I got it right.

Wow, that's awesome. I've got a new avatar in lbp now (my Optimus Prime costume that I use as my avatar here) and I've got a shiny new level icon for my wip pinball level. Thanks.

If they patched in the ability to take pictures as a square, life would be so much easier, lol

Does seem like a pretty big oversight. Plus you lose a bit when you take a picture of a picture, but oh well.
