I would expect the core Bioshock mechanics to be there, but they did say in an interview that every part of the original bioshock needed to earn it's way into the new game.

Wow that's a really nice trailer! It looks to me like the next Bioshock will take up where I hoped the last one would. I'm thinking the girl in the window with the roses is one of the girls rescued at the end of part one...or not lol

@swanbrown Actually shes not. This game takes place way before Bioshock 1 or 2 did, so that would be impossible. I think shes 'Elizabeth' the girl you are trying to save from the flying city.
I'm wondering why they haven't made this a new IP, so far (aside from gameplay) it's got nothing to do with Bioshock. It's just like System Shock compared to Bioshock; different stories but a lot of small similarities. I actually may have seen a 'Ryan' in the trailer though. (Andrew Ryan's Dad? Grandpa? Great Grandpa?)
Also, anyone not liking the cities name? Columbia. I liked Raptures name, it was cool and had a meaning to it, while Columbia sounds really un-original. (Ripping off an actual places name.)
Finally, these 'Big Daddy'-esque creatures are sounding creepy, in the trailer you see a human heart, but apparently they also have a human head D: I liked the mystery of the Big Daddys actual look, these new guys sound a lot like some sort of Frankestein, with no mystery

If the game does turn out to be quite different I think they probably would have put it under the Bioshock name for sales purposes I guess. I wouldn't make judgements yet after all they have only released one trailer that hasn't even got any gameplay in it.I'm wondering why they haven't made this a new IP, so far (aside from gameplay) it's got nothing to do with Bioshock.

Yes, now this IP is famous, giving it up would be madness ! Also, a marginal city populated by crazed people and guarded by BigCreatures would have sounded like a plagiarism
(or simply like another similar game without anything new)

Are you freaking KIDDING me?? Bioshock in the sky now?
wha... I... I don't...
Seriously, what are they going to do for the next one? Stick it in a volcano? A grand underground city built amongst rivers of magma!
Space?
compher's basement?
How many hostile places can there BE to shove a city? Bioshock was so imaginative and presented such an original world, but this thing is just getting absolutely ridiculous now.Six Teeby Levels

I thought the same thing at first Teebonesy, but after reading the story description, I've changed my tune. I'm very interested to explore the world of Columbia!

So I'm still incredibly dubious about this whole thing. It's a hell of a step up from Bioshock 2 - which, granted, I never played, but what's the point really? more of the same. At least this isn't that, but I still can't shake how far into ridiculousness this could spiral.
I do love the time period - Ken Levine describes it as "Fourth of July 1900".
But here's where I actually get really excited and start paying attention. From Ken Levine via the Playstation blog:
THAT'S got me downright thrilled. First Person Shooters have all blended into a mash of same-old crap as far as I'm concerned. They all play the same. Nobody's pioneering anymore, everyone's just releasing the same thing over and over and over.

Part of your challenge in this world is figuring out who is a threat and who isn’t. Or, if you’re in a combat situation, if there’s a way to bring another person to your side somehow. We sort of pioneered this with BioShock with the notion of the Big Daddy, who didn’t attack you right away, and here we’ve extended this idea throughout the world. We realized quickly that this is much more like the way the real world works. In shooters, we’re not accustomed to that — we’re used to everyone seeing you and shooting you. From a narrative perspective, this gives us a ton of freedom.
I think this really goes to show how outdated and behind the times and slow going we are with videogame progress. That this notion of "not everyone is out to get you, you don't have to shoot everything that moves" is somewhat novel outside of an RPG. Of course, we've already seen this with Deus Ex, but it sounds like their approach on this concept could be very interesting. I hope they don't just graze the concept slightly as they did with the Big Daddies, but really explore it as a crucial design element.
I'm now very excited to see some gameplay footage showing off this particular feature.Six Teeby Levels

I can't help but feel like this trailer is deliberately misleading us. Bioshock 1 and 2 took place during the earlier years of the Cold War, but now Infinite is jumping back to pre-WWI era without any sort of explaination; granted, time travel is a possibility but it seems a bit too out there even for the retro-futuristic themes of the earlier games, and the idea that it will be a prologue to them sort of undercuts the isignifigance of what Rapture was (the result of one man's vision and dissatisfaction with the rest of the world) when elements of it is retroactively introduced into the past.
I'm actually inclined to believe that the PC you use is actually a splicer so mentally disturbed that he's completely out of touch with reality and hallucinating his current surroundings, while actually still being beneath the ocean. This could actually lead to some interesting "Eternal Darkness"-esque insanity gameplay though.

well, there's been a lot of talk about this being more of a final fantasy style sequel, a game "in the spirit of" without being directly connected.I can't help but feel like this trailer is deliberately misleading us. However, I do believe they're connected because Ken Levine has been deliberately cryptic in answering this. If the above were true, I really think he'd be best off just admitting it - but instead he hints that there is some connection - though not overt, it's something you "discover" in the game.

@Teebonesy
I think you're forgetting a large part of Bioshock and Bioshock 2 - the plots. While the gameplay is similar (But considerably better in 2), the storyline in both is the main attraction. They are deep and full of emotion, as well as very interesting. I recommend you do play 2, as it was a brilliant game.
@Dapiek Absaroka
Who said anything about time travel? O.o
Obviously it is set before Bioshock 1 and 2, but as both would be "secret" societies, Ryan wouldn't have known about Columbia when he was having Rapture built. Or, it could be in a different time line all together. I actually quite like the splicer theory, but surely he would just see it as pre-war Rapture as the Little Sisters do?
Personally I can't wait for this, I think it'll be a brilliant venture. Columbia seemingly takes all the patriotism of Rapture, all the while maintaining the dark edge. If that is the case, I can't wait,"Infinite in mystery is the gift of the goddess
We seek it thus, and take it to the sky
Ripples form on the water's surface
The wandering soul knows no rest" - LOVELESS, Act 1.

Bioshock 2's gameplay has significantly more polish, but the first one had a far better atmosphere.@Teebonesy

Columbia is not a secret society. It was publicly known from what I have read. This is one of the reasons I find it hard to believe that anybody would care about Rapture... Yeah, underwater cities are nice... But, if there was a flying city... I wouldn't be too impressed with the underwater one in comparison.
I suppose it's possible that the games are directly connected somehow, but I just don't really think it's that believable.
