Fatal flying Guillotine: I've always wanted to do a ninja level, so here it is, Ninja-style.

    video by Gilgamesh

    HD video by Trindall

Alot of work and expirimentation has gone into the aesthetics, architecture, and detail to give the level a very unique and pleasing look, but the focus here is platforming, gameplay, variety, fun, replay value and score optimization. I'm hoping it's a hit with people who like to keep #1 on the scoreboard.

There's technically not 36 Chambers in total, but it's named after the debut album from my favorite group; the Wu-Tang Clan... I thought it was fitting, and although I thought 36 would be too repetitive and long for one level, there may end up being more, but LBP2 is looming.

    Hope you enjoy.

Hello, I was the first person to play this (other than you). I'm the kind of person that likes to keep #1 on the scoreboard, so it was no wonder that I loved this level! Tough levels are one of my favorite kinds, but it's pretty hard to make a challenging level fun, but you succeeded! Awesome work, I rated the level and tagged it 'Brilliant'.

  3. Thanks!

Same here Frogboy so I had to take the lead on the scoreboard . Very, very fun level. Lots of new game play mechanics in this one. How the hell you come up with this stuff? Nice job hiding this from me jk. 5 stars and a for sure. Also will try my best to keep the top score .

edit: Love the new areas. Those ninja scared me at first cause they weren't there the 1st playthrough. Also like the other new addition to the level. Good stuff!

Well, I guess I should've realized this level would be hard. Misjudging the difficulty I had left my ninja skills behind and so at first found this very challenging...however once I got the hang of your type of ninja puzzler it became a fun platformer that required some thought before progressing. Gameplay was varied, visuals were interesting and clean...overall, 5/5!

thanks you guys... thanks for the support with the initial publish frog and lightmare. i tried publishing it a couple times and kept getting 1 starred right away, and everyone's levels seem to be on a slowwww play count crawl lately.

thanks for checking it out Lockstitch. I'm still a bit rusty, and focusing on gameplay over story and puzzles is new for me, so i'm glad you played through the difficulty and liked it; always good to get a positive response from whoever's making the best levels at the time, heh. i wanted it ninja-core, but not ridiculous with pinhead platform jumps, and disappearing megaman blocks.

  9. Thanks!

OMG! I saw you published it yesterday but for some strange reasons I thought you had only published a locked backup.
I loved the look of the chambers, really brilliant and fresh.
I will play it today for sure!

Played it and got the 2nd score.
I loved the level, loved the visuals, and loved the Urban Ninja Dojo atmosphere.
The gameplay is really cool (first room wasn't meant to be easy?) and really ninja-esque.
Loved every second of it, especially the fact that you can't die cheap to have an easy race to a checkpoint near the doors.
5 stars and a heart man!

Wow.... I didn't even know you published a new one! Will go in there and check it out tonight.

EDIT - Ok, played it..... I SUCK!

Wow, I love the level.... but I think I died about 100 times. I'm determined to go back in tonight now that I know how go get past everything and try for a high score. Man, there are some ingenious sections in there.

thanks ccub and troph. i think i underestimated the difficulty, but hopefully it feels fluid and doable... glad you saw it through, cuz.

l1ghtmare and I are 3 and 2 right now, and big surprise, good ol shenoa77 has #1 again by a few thousand. i won't be able to beat her without a perfect play.

i actually still have fun playing my own level after testing it to death... yay, mission accomplished.

Darn you. I can safely say that never again will I go trough that; not because I hated, but because I care not for the scoreboard, but I do for being able to finish levels.
However, I very much loved the experience. I had loads of fun, loved the aesthetics and specially the clever sections.

5 stars both ingame and here, and a heart

Actually, the second time I played through it I breezed through, only dying a couple of times. It was difficult to tell how I did with the score because of the scoring issue... There are actually two sets of high scores that flip back and forth.... But I think i got around 76,000. I was top score on one of the servers last night.

err that's weird ccub. i know the server was temporarily down last night, but i've never had that happen i don't think. let the boy play it sometime; i'd be curious to see if he digs it despite the difficulty.

thanks for the good words, keldur. nice to hear from somone who did arguable the very best ninja/islands level in the community. it was definitely levels like that, and even the oldest of old school ninja obstacle courses that inspired this... i'm a junkie for anything feudal.

i hope you get bored enough to punish yourself again sometime though, heh. especially since i think i'm finally done doing the finishing touches and added a new chamber early into the level to give it a little more spice, but keep the flow. i'm totally maxed now, so i upped the timer a little and think i'll be now.

thanks all who've played it... only 100 so far, but that's better than my last

  20. Thanks!

    Awesome level.

It takes some skill to get the timing right on some of these challenges, but overall it's very fun. Love the style also.

There was a lot of luck involved in that run. I don't usually pass that smoothly in all of those sections.

But hey, I won't complain. It makes it better looking for the video!

really had a blast with this level ninj... i played it a few minutes after you messaged me yesterday morning. so i went over and had at it. took me a while, lots of dying and lots of laughs as well (those ninja sound effects are hilarious, especially the one at the top of the wheel when you get squished), but i finished on my first attempt. i'm not sure what happened on my first run though. it didn't have all the score bubbles that it had the second time i played it (today) and a whole section of it i hadn't seen in my first play through (the section with the series of jumps as spiked cylinders fly at you.)

it's the kind of difficulty that doesn't take away from the fun of playing. my first attempt i didn't even come close to beating the race, so i came in dead last at 1400 + points. but on my second attempt i beat the race so i came in the top fifteen. by my fourth attempt i was #5 or 6 just a shade under 80,000 pts. still have yet to find all prize bubbles. that's next on my lbp to-do list later today.

i really loved it, a platformer that's also beautiful to look at. thanks for giving me the heads up. it's my new weird addiction.

  26. Thanks!

This was a fun level to play through for a few different reasons. Initially the level presents many obstacles that are fairly hard to get through, offering instant death for poor timing or lack of aerial precision. Getting to the end is a challenge all by itself and can be daunting for players who donít go into the more challenging platformer levels.

The difficulty level on this one is quite high but not in a real unfair way. This is hard in the manner that you need to learn the environment and have good hand-eye coordination more that it is hard due to poor level creation or set design. Like the excellent game Demonís Souls it has a steep learning curve but once you get the handle of it things arenít really that hard. I do see the difficulty of the initial rooms and the level in general to be a large stumbling block for many casual players though. There isnít any indication in the level description about just what the player is getting into.

Once you do get to the end and see the score distribution you can see that there is a wide range for being able to compete on the scoreboard. Probably since the level is new and the top 15 havenít been filtered to the best of the best but it does feel that there is a fair chance for even those not mastering the spinning jump to compete.

Throughout these two goals the level is filled with a consistent and interesting theme. I really enjoyed the liveliness of the rooms, the constant linear and angular touches that really keep the sense of movement and tension constant. The set design is excellent with both the artistic and creative decoration and innovative structure that youíve done so well in previous levels.

The pacing is a bit uneven I thought as some rooms can be completed very quickly while others can drag on an on which became more and more noticeable as I got better and better with the different obstacles. The sixth chamber with the raising/lowering segments is the most notable part of this. Compared to the length of the previous and latter chambers this plays as if it was two or three chambers all in one.

There are three distinct segments to this on room, running along the bottom, swinging to the door key switch and then swinging back again, while other rooms have only a single segment. This chamber does seem to take up the majority of the playtime proportional to the rest and gives a slightly imbalanced feel to this part of the level.

The music doesnít get in the way of the level and is usually overplayed by the SFX which youíve really implemented well to add another layer of experience to the play. The crashing, thumping and banging do well to increase the sense of threat while the ninja based SFX add to the humour and enjoyment.

I really liked that while youíve come up with a fairly straightforward if tricky level it is still a very different platformer than many out there. This doesnít fit very well into the run/jump mold and exercises platforming elements that donít get much attention. The launch pads, the swinging and rotating grab circles are usually gimmicks but youíve put them into a cohesive and challenging level that gives these elements their time in the spot light.

I think that there are still two prize bubbles I havenít figured out yet but when I was playing through earlier I was more intent on the scoreboard competition than in secret hunting but all the more reason to try the level a few more times in the future. Iím hoping that the sticker that will activate the sticker switch at the start because the level badge sticker you get in the middle, even though being of the exact design as the sticker switch, doesnít do the trick. I suspect that there is a trick to it all however and Iíve just got to figure it all out. (That and the prize at the end which may be only a multiplayer reward.)

Good work on this level. Cheers

thanks for the really detailed review, trindall... and glad you loved it, nirvana :D i'm really having fun playing this too, even though i'll restart 15 timnes then give up on beating shenoa's score everytime heh

i agree about the 6th chamber, trindall. i think of it like Voltiare's H.A.T.E. level with the final chamber being an epic monster wheel, and then a little cool down segment to unplug glados after. i'd like one or two more rooms before it (i added that extra segment, after removing a different subpar one, that nirvanagirl mentioned for pacing and balance) that have a 1/3rd and 2/3rds length/difficulty balance to build up to it. if i come up with anything good i'll try and therm glitch them in. the nice thing about the compartmentaluized design of the chambers is i can slide them inbetween the others and change the order without much hassle.
