Console gamers are reporting that the official DICE servers for Battlefield 3 multiplayer have been completely withdrawn, with the game now largely playable only on private rented servers.

Publisher Electronic Arts and developer DICE recently made the bold move of introducing a server-rental scheme to console versions of Battlefield 3. At $30 for 30 days, these servers don’t come cheap, but this hasn’t stopped the Battlefield community from signing up in droves.

Initially there were plenty of official DICE and EA servers running concurrently with the new private servers. Over the past week, however, console players have noticed the official servers disappearing, to the point where DICE-managed servers are no longer visible on either PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360.

Running a search on the PS3 version of Battlefield 3 this morning — by looking for the prefix P24 and the letters PRGM — I managed to track down just 17 EA-run servers. I could not find a single official DICE server. Compare this to the hundreds of private servers that were up and running, with names such as “Heaven & Hell,” “Guerilla_hilbily’S SERVER” [sic], and “Just 4 Fun 24/7” — most of which were completely empty. Anything with the word DICE in the title was simply a rented server with the official name dropped in by the host.

Of the 17 EA public servers that I did find, eight were running Rush mode, while the remainder were hosting Team Deathmatch, Squad Deathmatch, or Squad Rush games. I could not find any official servers hosting a round of Conquest, the traditional mainstay of the Battlefield franchise.

Official Electronic Arts and DICE-run multiplayer servers for console versions of Battlefield 3 have nearly all been removed, requiring players to join in privately-operated matches, according to reports from the game's players.

EA began allowing players to rent out servers for the Xbox and PS3 versions of the game for $30 for 30 days — a fairly steep price to begin with. According to a number of Redditors (whose complaints were compiled by VentureBeat), those two platforms have seen a withdraw of "official" servers run by either EA or DICE since the private options were made available.

In an Ask me Anything Reddit thread, DICE community manager Daniel Matros responded to concerned fans, saying "There is only so much physical space and digital space where you can have servers. The community requested [a rental program] and we delivered."

When another commenter raised the same concerns, Matros added, "I've heard this for a while now and the feedback has gotten louder. This is definitely something I will raise when I get back into the studio tomorrow."

At the time of this writing, we weren't able to find a single official server on the 360 version of Battlefield 3. A handful were marked with {DICE}, a designation used to note servers hosted by the developer, but they do not appear to be genuine.

It's like EA wants me to hate them.

I'm not too sure about that. I normally just like to just join a game. Better start finding servers I like.

On the PC side it has always been that way in the franchise. Many clans etc, have their own servers and rotate maps they like as well as enforcing rules or "no rules" per their favorite personal play style.

Not sure about PS3, but there is already a way to add favorite servers via the battlelog. I think it quite cool as you get to know some folks as well as admins that do a good job keeping out undesirables (i.e. smacktards). Like those that cheat (aimbots, wall glitchers etc), take vehicles to just do donuts and try to run you over for fun (same team), or those that take the chopper and blow up all your assets (same team) rather than the enemy...

Official servers being available for consoles though was a much better system. On PC you can make, join, and connect to servers better because of the interface was cleaner. To join a private server on consoles requires you to go online via PC, which pretty much defeats the purpose of owning the console version.

I'm only basing this private joining for PS3 on the Battlelog. I'm not sure how exactly you join because I never joined private servers.

A rare situation. Most of the time the admins are morons who ban you for being too good. A lot of them just make servers to have their friends play on it, so getting into one is like crashing a party with a last minute invitation. Not only that, but you have to play on those same servers constantly, thus limiting you meeting new people and new 'variety' of gameplay (I say this since sometimes people tend to follow the same tactic over and over). Making private servers is fine, but forcing it on everyone is another.

Oh, and $30 for one month is ridiculous. Like 'Activision's DLC prices sound cheap compared to this; not even joking here' ridiculous.

Old news... I unlocked all the guns on day 1 of it being out for PS3 and I plan on doing the same when I get premium for PC...

I grabbed a SPAS-12 from some dead guy once. All I can say is that I can't wait to buy premium now!

Well it doesn't seem like old news to this thread. I see no mention of anyone playing it.

But yeah I have premium on PC and Close Quarters on PS3. Very cool maps. But on the PC, i'm constantly killed by shotgun spammers and rank 100 losers.

AUG has NO recoil and it's stopping power is way too high
M417 is WAY TOO POWERFUL. One or two shot kills with semi-auto sniper rifle?
Spas has the power of the 870 with the speed of the auto shotties (somewhat) making it incredibly overpowered
the m5k has barely any spread or recoil making spray and pray with it a breeze
the L8 light machine gun thing has too low recoil

All of these new guns are incredibly overpowered.. forcing people to buy it. And then they'll fix it in a patch after the hype for the DLC has gone down making it balanced fairly... such a complete @&* move by DICE in my opinion. Just wait till Armored Kill... freakin super overpowered vehicle weapon attachments.

I have it on PC and think the new maps are pretty fun. Seriously keeps you on your toes! DON"T BLINK!!

Never really noticed the new guns so much being overpowered. I have tried the SPAS-12 and not bad.. It is seems a bit slow between shots compared with the DAO-12. I did get the AUG and it seems no more powered than the F2000. The no recoil bit might explain why I was so awful with it.. I probably expect recoil and keep missing. lol

Here is a handy site for comparing weapons. Weird.. they don't have shotguns on there anymore. They did just the other day!!

i literally haven't noticed any difference, they drop all the same and I haven't noticed me dropping any more often.
still, the RPK-74M and most of the assault rifles are pretty powerful guns.

The only thing I know about is that the 40mm smoke fired from a M320 attached to an AUG will describe an almost straight line. Still, not a gamebreaker and probably will get patched soon.

AUGmented smoke is getting a temp fix until the next client patch.

    Hi all,

The RSPs will soon begin installing Server R27. The bulk of the update will be performed during Wed Jul 4th.

The six-digit build ID of the new server is 972386.

    Changelist
    * You can no longer revive someone who has switched team while being dead. This prevents a case where soldiers would be resurrected into the new team while still wearing the old team's uniform.
    * The "invisible boats" problem is fixed. We had something similar in BFBC2, and the same solution was applicable in BF3.
    * You can no longer equip the M320 Smoke grenade launcher to the underslung rail on the AUG 7. This prevents the AUG getting insanely high bullet velocity (and therefore, no discernible bullet drop).

There are no changes to the documentation.

For PC. Not too sure about consoles, though...

    Oh Nevermind... Found it.

    Hi all,

we are gradually updating the PS3 & Xbox 360 servers throughout the day (Tue Jul 3rd).

    Wait, the SPAS-12?
    No, I hate it.
    So much.
It has too much range for a shotgun. TOO MUCH RANGE.

So I played a couple of matches recently and I realized:
-Tanks are very, very easy to disable (often taking one hit makes orange smoke fill the whole place)
-Portable heat seekers are very random.
-Splash damage for almost everything is nil. Even for MBTs.
-Attack helicopter (mainly gunner seat) is super nerfed vs vehicles.
-I suck at infantry gameplay. For some reason I always end up in a CQC situation, and lose.
-I show up on enemy minimaps when I fire. Wow DICE, really?
    -Metro is still awful.
-Players don't really try to capture enemy vehicles: every time an enemy flees a damaged vehicle, I try to fix it and take over it, but my teammates destroy it before I get in.
-The game is kind of more balanced.
-Explosives are very stable and won't be destroyed unless directly hit by a tank shell.
-Some people still use USAS-12 frag even in large maps like firestorm.
-I can use the F35 and not die on my own.
    -Official DICE servers are extinct.
One thing I thought about is a tool that allows squad leaders to pinpoint a location for air support to engage. This can increase ground-air cooperation which now is almost inexistent.
I hope artillery in Armored Kill doesn't work like mortars do.

I hate the amount of splash damage the attack choppers have. I also think they should have less missiles and reload slower. I also think they should have to return to base to reload. I mean if they see a hit come up after they fire somewhere, they can just lay to waste the entire area wherever you are hiding until you are dead. The only defense that I have had on them is if I happen to be sniper and can get one good shot at them during the insanity. However 9 times out of 10 if I hit anyone, I hit the gunner since he is in the front seat. lol

..but I know what you mean about the MBT splash damage. In BF2 I could just shoot at their feet which is a bit safer shot than attempting to shoot at their head or body as you could miss. Though in real life, I think a shell passing that close to you would at least do something!! Heck, I have hit people at their feet or even their knees and sometimes get just a blink that I hit them and they are scampering away.. other times, no hit at all!! REALLY?? I had one guy crawling around under a semi trailer and shot perfectly at him and did no damage at all. Now if I shoot at a wall in one of the buildings, that usually blows out a huge section, so I don't quite understand the logic here. I am betting if I had an attack chopper and shot at that same spot under the semi trailer, he would have been gone.

Oh one tip, if you use a suppressor I don't think you show up on the mini map. Though the gun is then nerfed.

In fact, I believe that the disable threshold in tanks should be around 30%, not 50%.
-Portable heat seekers are very random.
Sometimes I think it's because the enemy might have below radar, but I think that it renders the portable heat seekers almost impossible to use. At least they're a one-hit disable to balance.
-Splash damage for almost everything is nil. Even for MBTs.
I believe that's because the AT shell is a highly concentrated armor piercing projectile, so the splash damage is minimal. As for rocket launchers, it's to prevent them being overused against infantry.
-Attack helicopter (mainly gunner seat) is super nerfed vs vehicles.
For the pilot, with 14 rockets before reload, it's enough. Machine gun isn't supposed to do a lot of damage, and guided missiles should be powerful enough to counter the number of people that just realized that IR Smoke is useful and began using it.
-I suck at infantry gameplay. For some reason I always end up in a CQC situation, and lose.
I only suck at infantry in large maps, because either somebody comes from a random direction or a vehicle comes.
-I show up on enemy minimaps when I fire. Wow DICE, really?
Well, it makes players think before they give away their position. It also gives suppressors a meaning. And no, don't claim that they stole the idea from CoD.
    -Metro is still awful.
On any server with more than 32 players and metro only it is.
-Players don't really try to capture enemy vehicles: every time an enemy flees a damaged vehicle, I try to fix it and take over it, but my teammates destroy it before I get in.
In rush gamemodes it's reasonable. Mostly when there's only one or two vehicles in the map, stealing the enemy vehicle could give an unfair advantage. Some servers kick for vehicle stealing.
-The game is kind of more balanced.
    I have that feeling too.
-Explosives are very stable and won't be destroyed unless directly hit by a tank shell.
I can destroy explosives with frag rounds, grenades, and even the MAV. Just have to aim properly, and all that C4 in the enemy Mcom will be put into great use.
-Some people still use USAS-12 frag even in large maps like firestorm.
I admit that I use it sometimes (post patch), specially when I notice that the teams are unbalanced. While it is still capable, it's not overpowered like it used to be. Frag rounds now have weak splash damage and slowed rate of fire. I never found anyone using it but myself. I'm also glad that people don't hate on USAS-12 users anymore. Some people don't realize that it is only good at close range. I could argue that snipers are OP because they can kill with one hit when I can't retaliate then.
-I can use the F35 and not die on my own.
    Yay!
    -Official DICE servers are extinct.
I play on PC, so that's irrelevant to me.
One thing I thought about is a tool that allows squad leaders to pinpoint a location for air support to engage. This can increase ground-air cooperation which now is almost inexistent.

I can see it being the same, that's probably how it works with all this modern technology. But I guess it wouldn't be pinpoint accurate.
