Actually, I don't think it matters all that much whether you're connected to PSN or not, just don't import at the first prompt (like the beta) and it might be a good idea to clean house on your profile before bringing it in. I've been online (in story and create) since the first day with no signs of freezing. See this:

This trick didn't work for me. I'm still freezing every time I go to upgrade. I booted up LBP, backed up my profile, turned off the internet, turned on LBP2, got through the intro, got to the pod, and tried to import my account. It is still freezing. Is there something I missed?

another way is to press no to import your lbp1 file, finish the intro, finish davinci's laggy levels, then while in pod, press start, go to settings, go to profile settings, then press import objects from littlebig planet.. then you are done.

I didn't realize at the time, but I didn't actually import my profile after I got to the pod. All I did was import my objects/costumes, not the levels on my moon. When I tried again, it froze again. Guess I'll have to export all my levels in lbp and import them one by one into lbp2, and hope none of them make it freeze.

As a precaution, I disconnected from Playstation Network and didn't import when it asked me to. Instead I did the intro level, went back to pod and here's your answer TREMIC1, went to:
Pause menu> settings> profile> import profile.
Worked perfectly, did not freeze and never has since.Do you trust me?

Hey Screeno
I had no problems whatsoever. The game has yet to glitch or crash and all my stuff auto-imported without any problem. Well, it does seem like there's a lot less stuff in my stickers and decorations than there used to be, but my levels and custom costumes and costume bits all seem to be there...
So it's not the apocalypse, chances are you'll be fine!

I'm still having the problem. What's super annoying is that after I attempt to import and crash, when I start up next time, it automatically tries to import without even asking, which also results in a crash. They only way I can get out of this is to delete my LBP2 profile, but then I'm back at square 1!
