Default HOW TO: Get LBP1 Alphabet/Fonts Working In LBP2

NOTE: I decided to post this after seeing mistervista's LBP2 bug list. Also, I am unsure if a tutorial on this has already been posted or not. This is only a partial fix for the problem, and hopefully MM will address this problem in the future.

THE PROBLEM: You can't use individual letters from alphabets/fonts from LBP1 ported to LBP2 because in LBP2 when you try and select a seperate letter it selects the entire alphabet/font.

THE SOLUTION: Place the font, then capture/or re-capture the font. The captured/re-captured version should now be usable, meaning you should now be able to select individual letters.

Do you mean these hideous letters that seem to be mostly hairy ? They've always worked fine for me, I might have been lucky. However, if you're talking about another font then I'm interested in knowing which !

Don't think you have to leave the level, I captured the font, then placed the captured font down, like you said you can now move individual letters, once i had what i wanted i then dissolved what was left ( letters i didn''t use), then i could capture just the word i wanted. all very time consuming though! there must be a quicker way?

  4. Thanks!

Thanks! I will update the topic. ^^

    @PhiphyL:

You might be thinking of something else. If it's hairy font then it is from LBP2. The topic of this thread says LBP1 fonts ported to LBP2. That means any font from LBP1.

the way I utilize fonts is fairly fast id say :P
since my fonts are community objects when I place them I cant change the shapes of the items so all I had to do was attempt to place a layer of material in the same place/layer as the font items and I would effectively get a stencil for any letter made from the material that I attempted to place over the font (then id just have to copy the stencil and lay a new copy of it into a different material creating copies of the letters :P)

That sounds a lot more tedious than just placing, capturing, and placing. The method in topic can be done less then 10 seconds, literally. And it doesn't matter if its from community objects or my objects, which is what I meant by capture (if community) or re-capture (if already in my objects).

Making stencils can be messy too since the more narrow complex parts of fancy font can cause merging in the material where you place them unless you greatly expand the font first, which would take even more time. Not saying that's required for all fonts.

Whatever works for you I suppose. ^^ I'm sure there's uses for your technique.

Just so everyone is aware, the font level that I created (contains 15 of them) has been made copyable, so just go in and get them for yourself.

You can select individual letters, but attempting to copy/paste them still causes the entire set to be copied, and deleting a letter causes all letters from the set to be deleted.

The stenciling technique, although requiring a greater amount of effort up-front, still allows more flexibility in how you can use the font in the long term, so it's well-worth doing if you need to do a significant amount of work with one.

Another trick I noticed about linked object-sets (i.e. collections of objects which have dotted lines linking them when you try to place them), is that destroying the "key object" in a captured version will remove the individual object copy/paste restriction.

The "key object" in any set is the one which the popit cursor line points to when you try to place it - in Comph's "Block Simple" font, for example, it's the letter 'A'. So...

    1. Place the font set from Community Objects.
    2. Capture the set as a new object into My Objects.
    3. Place the copy of the set from My Objects.
    4. Material change the letter 'A' to dissolve, and attach a battery to it.
    5. Quickly unpause then repause to allow the 'A' to dissolve.
    6. The remaining letters can now all be copied/pasted individually.

Okay, so you lose the ability to use the 'A', but you could repeat the process to dissolve everything except the 'A'.

I used the same technique on his 3D layer tool to destroy the rear-most block, thus allowing the tool to work as intended.

Thanks Aya - I did not know this!

Is it perhaps possible to manipulate the system and use this "weakness" against it? I mean, is there any way for the player capturing the object to control which will be the "key object"?
If so, couldn't you just create simple square, insignificant block of material and "assign" that as the key object, leaving the rest of the font unharmed upon its removal?

I believe it's whatever object occupies the top-left position when you capture.

However, it's unnecessary to go to these lengths - if you keep the letters in an editable state, then they can be individually copied/pasted when collected from a prize bubble. From an earlier post...

    3. They must not have been given a name before putting them in the prize bubble.
The rules differ slightly when dealing with prizes which contain only a single piece of material. From another post...

If you do use the trick, you can name it or not, and it stays smearable when sent to someone else, or put in a prize bubble.

This is why many of the prizes in my level have no name, as they can't be made smearable, and giving them a name would make them uneditable.

Frankly the whole system is a bit bizarre, but there's not really any way 'round it.

Mr_Fusions font level is the best. You can capture the fonts and move them individually. http://lbp.me/v/4kvzqc

Sorry but that's the first thing I tried and it didn't work. I've tried it several times since with lots of different fonts and it's never worked.
