Default Metal Revolution (MM Pick for Jan 20!)

"Metal Revolution" is a full-length level with an interesting game mechanic that is used to get through. It includes a multiplayer section, a collection of prizes (all easily avoided if you prefer), multiple methods of passing obstacles, and a bonus awarded based on your performance in the level.

I put a lot of time into this level and I'm really happy with how it came out. I hope you all enjoy it!

Screenshots are below. Visit mediamolecule.com if you'd like to see a video!

It's straight up platforming (not story-driven), so the focus is on getting past the traps and obstacles. There are a few areas which take some thought in order to get to, but they are optional. These optional areas award points or prizes. Multiple players can rack up extra points in a couple areas by 'stringing' together sections of point bubbles that are too far apart for one player to collect at once.

The art direction has a dark feel overall but lights and backgrounds are used to keep this from becoming an impediment to gameplay. There's a pretty restricted color palette which really adds to the mood. Audio design was also carefully considered. There's an industrial feel carried throughout the level, and the traps and obstacles are believable within their settings.

Gameplay is designed to teach you what you need to do with the objects before putting you into a life-or-death situation. Clues are always provided to let you know where the traps are and how to avoid them. Difficulty level is moderate. Players who have finished LBP's story mode shouldn't have any problems completing this.

I should also mention that that level's icon is the first screenshot from the next post, and it's located in the Indian ocean.

Does that help? I'd encourage you to just give it a try, because it's much more interesting to play than I'm able to describe.

I have some screenshots to add.

Edit: Took out the crappy photos and replaced them with proper in-game screenshots.

I'm giving this a try as I type.

I'll give you my feedback afterward!

I'm amazed that you've only gotten 4 plays after all this time.
I think it's completely unfair that other levels by notable authors are always talked about, but ones by new and budding creators get ignored.

    Well, no longer!

    FOOEY.

    Well said man!
Just add a Fooey to the end of that post and then send it to MM and you'll be the hero who saved the LBP search engine, and who triumphed over the whole stupid Cool Levels system. Good for YOU!

The one thing I love about this site is that you find much better levels than you would by just using Cool Levels, I'll have to try this level out....I never tried out that one level with the offices that you swing in on a wrecking ball on and crash through the wall either. Need to try those......

I got stuck in your level.

I made it to the part:
Where you have to get off the "tire" so it can pass through the gas and make it safely to the other side. When I got to the place with the motion sensor with the blue tire, nothing happened.

    Did I overlook something?

Otherwise, I really like your level. Great lighting and ambience-- really.
You just need to get close enough to the motion sensor that you see there to activate it. I thought the arrows pointing to it were enough of a clue, especially since you passed a similar door already... but I do realize the technique needed might not be the first thing to come to mind. (That's why I make you do it here, where your life isn't on the line)

Don't know how to do it?
The wheel is made of material you can grab onto. Run the wheel into the door, jump as high as you can and grab onto it, and then swing the whole thing back the other way. You'll swing up around the top of the wheel and right past the sensor, opening the door. You'll need this technique to pass a trap later on!
Edit: I fixed this for all players by adding a hint system to the level. This should help others to get through as well.

I tried to spread the word in the recommendation forum. I didn't make the topic though. I just posted.

    Talking

I've spent quite a bit of time in this level. Here's my opinion:

This is an incredibly unique level. Unlike a lot of other levels in LBP, this level requires some commitment. The first time I played through I felt a little frustrated (not unlike some great professionally-designed games).

However, I learned the mechanics and got used to different ways of solving the puzzles, this game REALLY grew on me. To a point that I ended up going back and playing it many times.

The concept of the game is you roll a big wheel thoughout the level. You can get inside the wheel and simply walk and it rolls. While the wheel is rolling to the right you can jump up and grab ahold of it on the left side and drag it to make it roll faster - and also to ride higher in the air to set off switches and avoid obstacles. You can get on top of blocks and use them to jump on top of the wheel, thus getting additional points that seem impossible. You can jump on top of the wheel from a higher elevation and roll it by walking on top of it to make it to new points in the game.

The game rewards you for being careful with your wheel and delivering it all the way to the end with additional points (if you need to pick up a different wheel than you started with you get less points - which gives you a reason to play it several times).

This is a fairly lengthy level where the author carefully thought out each section.

I feel this author has created a truly unique experience in LBP and I hope it catches on. Instead of concentrating on pretty effects and objects, he concentrated on depth of experience. It definately won't appeal to casual players who want a quick pretty experience, but it succeeds as a well-thought-out niche puzzle game that virtually everyone on this forum will enjoy.

Gameplay: 10/10 (if you enjoy a challenge)
Style and graphics: 8/10 (appropriate for the game, but nothing that is going to blow you away visually - but then again, the graphics in some of the best games ever are simple)

Thanks to the MGS pack, I've just updated the level with more variations in music. That's something I think it needed, but was unable to do with the music selections in LBP alone.
