Set the scene is simple: make a level based soely on choreographed events. You can make anything from a Rube Goldberg machine to a level full of close calls. The sky's the limit!
Rules
1. The entire string of events must be triggered by only one base action.
2. There is no limit on switches or any other building material. Use what you want to!
3. Make sure it is actually a level so we can play it ourselves. It doesn't have to be a platformer or any other specific type, but we have to be able to try it for ourselves.
4. All level mechanics must be visible. No hiding anything out of view.
5. Post using the following format and fill in any text in *asterisks*:
*level title* - *forum username*/*psn*[indent] Description:"*level description by author if available*" - *author's username*
6. Have fun!
Rewards
Each submission will earn 250xp automatically, but the winners will earn extra, so put your heart and soul into it!
1st place: 1000xp
2nd place: 750xp
3rd place: 500xp
Official Deadline: January 31, 2009
(I will end it at 6 PM that day PST *Pacific Standard Time*)

I have an old 3 stage rocket that has a very complex launch system which starts off with just one button press.
Although one could argue that the lift is a seperate part, it's really one object, with half of the systems powering the rocket built into the lift.
I haven't published though, I was hoping to do more polishing and hiding more of the mechanics, because as far as I know it used a fair amount of relatively unique systems...
But I guess I could try and uncover the stuff, do some final quick polishing and then submit it.
I knew I kept that old rocket lying around for some reason. I'll see what I can do about finishing it off and then publish it for this.
I do have one clarifying question though... one could technically argue that entering the lift to enter the rocket is a seperate move to actually initiating the rocket itself. Steering the rocket is controlled by the player moving back and forth, but no switches are actually involved in doing so.
But would it count though for this contest? Would it be a judges call? If necessary I can make it all one action I am sure, it would just need a few extra adjustments to do so.Levels published: A journey through a digestive tract; The TSR - Three Stage Rocket - an entry into "Set the Scene" contest.

Well, I went and fixed up my rocket. Maybe I'll make it give off some point bubbles at the end of it.
There is only one button pressed. The lift to get into it is on a motion sensor, the button is really obvious and in the control module, and the thing is steered by the player moving left and right.
I think it sounds like a big scene to me. I've tried to make it a bit dramatic with lighting and sound effects as well.
I've left all the magnetic switches and sensors and pistons and rockets and timers and all that visible. The only stuff I've hidden is non-essential magic mouths and most sound elements, because they look ugly. You can even tell what material almost everything is made out of as it's all default.
But yeah, the wirings a shocker. It's an 8 page document to build it.
So the official entry is:
*The TSR - Three Stage Rocket* - Elbee23/Elbee23

there is not official date because we do not have enough people in yet, but i am thinking somewhere around the 20th, i am just saying that if we do not have enough people in the contest by the 20th then not all of the prizes get handed out, and nobody wants that, so the unnoficial date is the 20th.
Cheers!
EDIT: The Official Deadline: January 20, 2009
i will edit this in to the top of this thread.Last edited by RAINFIRE; 01-01-2009 at 07:22 PM.

Could I suggest speaking to the appropriate people about getting this contest done up and put as a front page news post?
I just don't think it's got enough exposure at the moment. This thread has only been read 60 times.
Now that a rough deadline has been set and a first entry has been put in, you really need more exposure. That's why I suggest someone making a front page news post version of this.
If they don't know about the contest, they can't compete, especially if they don't have time to build a level by the due date.

hmmm i have a level i think may qualify...its my zombie onslaught... when you trip this sensor in the barn... it starts a machine i have going in the background...actually i have two of the same machine running now one had a delay switch so it started after the first one. and they spawn the zombies at a increasing rate...i also have a machine that changes the day time and different flood lights on and the environment a little... not sure if that would qualify

Maybe after the Treetop Escape competition finishes it could make front page news. There are not many days left until that happens. That way we get continuous competitions!

You might also want to have a reconsider about the deadline. At the moment it's fine, but if people don't know about it until a few days time, that won't leave too much time to create. It will be over a fortnight though, so I guess it's not too bad... ah well, I'll leave all that stuff to the contest organisers.
One more thing, I'm still updating and tweaking my entry. The contraption is still there, but I'm continuously adding minor improvements for things like sound effects, layout and graphical fluff. I hope to add a scoring system as well to make it a bit more replayable and to encourage people to finish it properly.
So in short I would not expect people to have entered to have not completely have done everything they can to their entry, not until the final day.

well just connect everything up, and just set up a button instead, (it makes it easier, for us to see when everything is going to start to activate) and makes sure it is only one switch that starts the events, and maybe you could combine all of your contraptions in to one big one, and make like a super one that you could submit here (just a nack of advicehmmm i have a level i think may qualify...its my zombie onslaught... when you trip this sensor in the barn... it starts a machine i have going in the background...actually i have two of the same machine running now one had a delay switch so it started after the first one. and they spawn the zombies at a increasing rate...i also have a machine that changes the day time and different flood lights on and the environment a little... not sure if that would qualify

@Elbee, oh and that would be great, to have happen, oh and i think i may win the "Treetop Escape" contest
the only score i was not able to beat was Linque's but he is the creator so his does not really count, i am only about 1000 below his but i am not going to try again unless i have to, so currently i hold the top spot with about 3000 ahead of second place.

i pretty much have to have two machines but they are linked to the same beginning sensor switch....i mean the night and day thing isnt linked up to it. if it absolutely had to be i could do it its not a big deal. i would just make a permanent switch on "on/off" linked up to the sensor switchwell just connect everything up, and just set up a button instead, (it makes it easier, for us to see when everything is going to start to activate) and makes sure it is only one switch that starts the events, and maybe you could combine all of your contraptions in to one big one, and make like a super one that you could submit here (just a nack of advice

I think I may go with your suggestion of a Rube Goldberg machine. Plenty of ways to make 'em original.

Wait a sec, I'm a bit confused. It sounds like you want some sort of chain effect, dominoes sort of thing. Are just plain contraptions okay?

Well, I think exactly what "scene" is set is very variable. Mine is a very complex rocket which is fired by one button press.
Others might be making a slide projecter animated film.
Still others might make a Rube Goldberg machine, where you have one thing activate, and it sets off a huge chain reaction to do a simple task. There are all sorts of video examples of those in real life.
I'm sure there are plenty of other possibilities as well.
By the way, I've just given a major overhaul to my rocket. It's got some graphical changes, yes, but the guiding lights are a WHOLE lot clearer now, and there is a scoring system included as well to encourage people to be as accurate as they can be. I still have further plans to tweak it up, and yes, it's still all one button press.
