Default Urgh, getting fed up now..

Yet again i find myself giving up yet ANOTHER level.. I've got about 20+ incomplete levels sitting on my moon, dating from June 2011-Jan 2012, i keep on trying to finish something, though the thing is, with my old levels, anything was good enough, the visuals were bland and the gameplay was uncreative.

But now, i get alot of people saying to challenge myself, create something new and unique, avoiding bounce pads and making something unique, which is pushing me to the edge of frustration with creators block. I like to say i'm good with visuals, concept art and drawing, though with gameplay and mechanics i just find myself stuck and giving up.

I would like to say i'm going to give it another try, to keep going until i actually succeed, but i don't think i will. I think i'm just going to admit i won't finish anything and play games that are fun to me, such as Rock band and uncharted 3.

I often wonder if it's not so much the gameplay that frustrates me, but the platforming side of things. I've only really ever known platforming, i've never known mini-games, movies or story based levels, only platforming. Sometimes i wonder if it's worth trying say an RPG since i know the logic behind it and the visuals on the recently published RPG's can be improved, since they focus heavily on RPG's, or even perhaps a racer?

I'm a HUGE fan of extreme sports, racing the most, so perhaps a racing game would be more suited for me? Perhaps a racer with weapons, defence, score, points, upgrades and multi-paths. It's not so hard to make, it's the time and patience required that's likely to throw me off, and i don't want to begin anything that i won't finish, since i'll only end up in anger and frustration.

I'd like to know your opinions.

    Should I:

    -A) Quit creating altogether.
    -B) Try again.
    -C) Try something else.
    -D) Other (please comment).

    I really don't know. :/

My answer is A. Wait was "A" keep trying? I say keep trying so that you can hone that skill to perfection then maybe try something else.

Have you tried helping others create? I was like this in LBP1 where I simply could not finish a level or anything, but eventually I made a small group of friends. Eventually I started co-creating with them and we got a few levels published. After a while, I finally ended up publishing my first level after getting some experience (and a little help) from them. Maybe that is what you need. Also, seeing someone else create is very inspiring. You get a new perspective on things and you'll learn a few things yourself.

Sorry to say but none of those things appeal to me. I'm generally the one teaching others things, rather than the other way around. As for co-creating, i've tried it many times and i just can't work with someone else who differ's in opinions to mine. Watching others or helping others create actually ends up me brb'ing for 30minutes whilst i watch tv, since i find it incredibly boring.

Sorry if i seem awkward, it's just how it is :/

    D) Maybe you're being too critical of your creations?

It's tough creating something totally new, unique, and mind-blowing...I don't think you need to put that kind of pressure on yourself. What exactly are you trying to get out of creating? Personally I find it very relaxing and my cat appreciates the fact that I'm not frantically mashing buttons or yelling at the TV. I don't try to create anything revolutionary, I just get an idea that I think would be interesting to make and see where it goes. If you like platformers just try to create a fun platformer with a nice theme/visuals...nothing wrong with that. If you find you have trouble completing stuff maybe you are choosing a project that is too big or too ambitious and you should scale back on things. At the end of the day, if you're not having fun don't force yourself, making levels can get tedious taking breaks to play other things and get new inspirations is always good.

  8. Thanks!

I create for fun, much alike my art in real life. Thing is, with LBP, the things i make are good, i'm told, but to me, it's not my best work. Every day i see new ways of improving so old work is scrapped, so a level i make has to be done in a day, otherwise it's not good enough, and that's not going to happen.

To be honest, i'm wasting everyone's time with this. Forget it, i'm just gonna get rid of LBP2, put it in a fire or something and concentrate on other games and real life art, those are two things i have no problems with.

This is probably the best advice for someone in your situation. LBP2 was the only game I played for months after the release. After working on a few different projects and not publishing anything for one reason or another, I decided to take a break and play some of the great games that came out this holiday season. Now I find myself slowly coming back to work on those unfinished levels and I try to incorporate some of the things I liked about those others games into my levels. I think a break from LBP may be exactly what you need to get some new ideas and start having fun again. If you're not having fun creating, what's the point?

I myself only published a few random levels and have 5 or 6 projects i started that possibly will never finish but know what?
I dont even care if i ever publish anything decent, i get hearted or my levels get much plays.
I just have fun creating and challenge myself to take what i created a step further incorporating new ideas (wich actually this is what makes LBP so unique) until eventually got bored and start something else or insert another BD in tray.
Bottom line (i am sure this kind of discussion took place at another thread) dont put yourself at pressure.
Create and use LBP as long as you have fun.

Why would you do that!? Your being ridiculous. Never get rid of anything you've liked, because you'll regret it eventually. Put it at the back of your shelf and come back whenever you feel inspired, putting LBP2 in a fire is stubborn, and you can't come back to something thats destroyed.
Who cares if no one likes your work? I'm sure SOMEONE will, I think using LBP2 as a creative expression vent is great, and you shouldn't be worried about what other people think

What happened to THIS Racingcreed? Hell, this was but a few days ago!

Personally i don't find it ugly, i do however think it needs work, so here's my advice.

-Decide on a theme, is the level themed in a Jungle, a swamp, volcano? You decide.
-Use decorations along side stickers, create unique vines for a jungle, rocks for a volcano etc..

I disagree with CYMBOL, i don't think the cardboard is the problem. Cardboard is a very good material to work with for themes, when stickered and decorated effectivly anyway. I'd say make copys of what you have and try different styles and themes, it's a matter of trial and error until you find something.

    Good luck!
    RC
I truly do not understand your standing point here Racingcreed. You've let the immature and highly expectant community of LBP ruin your experience. I would say more, but I'm positive that The excellent man above me has clearly outlined what I'm trying to say.
