Without a universal trade scheme that includes something everybody wants that can be used to get other things, people will now only trade 1-way to get what they want. If a person trades some food for an axe, and the person with the food doesn't want the axe, it will lead to one of the trader's death. Whether it will be starvation, or murder - one of them will die. So, what's the point in trading, then? Just kill and steal to get what you want, right?
