    Default Laser Chess

    http://lbp.me/v/b6y6hb

Laser Chess is now on LBP! Maneuver your pieces to attack your opponent's king, while defending your own. There is an instructional video available in game; I recommend watching it if you haven't played it yet. Music by Velvet--Audio, and myself. This game is for 2 players only, but it has a spectator feature for others to watch the game without adversely affecting it. Here's a few screen shots:

Please post here if you observe any glitches, including as much info as possible as to the circumstances under which they occurred. I will guarantee the first 10 F4F responses, but will do more if time allows.

Holy crap that was one of the coolest things I've ever played ever!!!! I loved every second of it! Me and my friends were laughing are heads off everytime we got another piece xD I hope this becomes an MM Pick.
Although I wasn't too impressed when I first entered the level.
I did enjoy the music though,

I love games like this! Everyone who reads this must play this level =3

Also, if you're gonna F4F, just pick ONE of the following:

I fixed a slight problem with the arrangement of the red pieces. However, a major bug has come to my attention, which will have to wait till tomorrow to fix. In the meantime, do not select a piece to move, then finish your move by rotating a different piece. Your opponent will be able to destroy any piece by clicking on it, including your king. I believe I know how to fix this, but I have to apply the fix to every piece, and I have to go to work early tomorrow.

I've played this one or two days ago with my friend, but be prepared to receive some criticism.

First of all, something nice. It's a cool idea - I recall similar board games with an Egyptian theme existing about online nerd stores - and the logic regarding laser refraction is good.

Now, mean stuff. There is no indication of how far individual pieces can move (ala NinjaMcWiz's LBP Chess where the board's compatible spaces light up if they're in movement range of your currently selected piece). If this is in the tutorial section of the level (which me and bonner didn't play), then this is a silly thing to mention... But it'd be a good touch.

Movement logic in and of itself works far too slowly, and the controls are sluggish to respond as your logic works. While part of this can be attributed to online-play's lag, the natural lethargy of the game is a significant downer and a detriment to it's quality.

Finally, the opening area featuring use of the 3D layer glitch is unnecessary and betrays the true (potential) quality of the game you've made.

Thank you for the feedback. The tutorial does mention that any piece can only move one space, not diagonally. Unfortunately, the sluggishness is somewhat necessary to prevent certain bugs and exploits. Because of the amount of logic involved, it was too easy for things to happen out of order, or the wrong amounts. For example, it was initially possible for a player to press r1 or l1 really fast, and rotate their own piece 3 or 4 times, and even cause it to use up one of the opponent's moves. I had to put in a small cool down timer to prevent this.
The instructional video is petty long (2 1/2 minutes, i think), but it has a lot of good information if you've never played the level before.

I will see about making it so when you select a piece, it shows you where you can move it. I initially didn't think that would be necessary, since all pieces move the same.

Regarding the entrance room, I thought it was pretty darn cool. And, let's face it...how many levels have you played that look amazing, but in reality are boring to play? To me, the most important thing is, people seem to be having fun playing it.

If any one piece can only move forward, then it's not in the style of Chess - it's in the style of Checkers, except no diagonals. In a similar vein, displaying possible move paths when pieces can only ever move one space forward would indeed be silly - as it'd only serve to highlight the actual limitations a player has.

Also, your movement logic doesn't sound wholly efficient if the enemy player can control his opponent's pieces. As I've praised before, you're directly competing with NinjaMcWiz's Mm Picked, highly logically sound game, and it has absolutely no movement-based issues whatsoever. While your idea is certainly worth playing this level, its enjoyment is based on if the participants can ignore the waiting game. I couldn't, I've got levels to play/mock, dernit!

I remember seeing this in the projects forum and I was really interested. I'll be sure to queue it.

EDIT: Just thought that I should point out that you misspelled laser in the level description .

I never said a piece can only move forward. I said it can move 1 space in any direction. Also, I was not aware that I was competing with anybody, nor was I aware that laser chess had been recreated on LBP prior to my publish. This is not totally a fabrication of my imagination; this game has existed for quite a few years. There are variations of it, but certain aspects are pretty consistent, which I tried to maintain.

I'm not sure what you mean by being able to control your opponent's pieces, unless you're referring to a bug that I mentioned earlier, which has already been fixed.

I will check out NinjaMcWiz's level, to see what you're talking about. Maybe it will give me ideas for improving my level.

Despite my response, I do appreciate your feedback, and will take your opinions into consideration.

EDIT: Could you post a lbp.me link to that level? I ran a search on that name and it came up with nothing.

EDIT (again): It now shows you, when you select a piece to move, where you can move it.

It's not laser chess like you have - it's regular chess with knights and queens and all that cool jazz. I cited it because it handed the movement logic far better than you did.

Also, don't worry about not being able to find it. It's only an Mm Pick with 60,000 plays. (☞' ー')☞

You would think with that many plays, it would show up in a search. Btw, you're comparing move logic between 2 completely different games. In chess, pieces only have to move. In my game, they can move, rotate, and fire lasers. Perhaps that lead to me taking a different approach to the logic. Do you know if he posted any info on how he made his level?

Chess pieces also have to have their movement blocked, and the capture mechanic also exists.

Here, I'll even show you how I'd handle this: Have a display on the screen that says what the player can do, i.e. 1 Movement Left + 1 Rotation Left. When the player selects a piece to rotate it, allow them to rotate it in place before making their decision on whether to rotate it left or right. Manual thinking - that is, fiddling with a piece while you're deciding what to do with it - is always a great thing to implement, which LBP Chess does.
