Hi I'm trying to make an airplane for one of my lvl's.
It's one that doesnt use wheels or chains to let it look like it flies but really does.
But it's kind of hard to control it (at least on you're own)
and I also know i still need to do a lot of work on it. But I would really appreciate it if someone goes ahead and tests it.
Its in sort of a testing lvl called flying impossible.
If you're interested try it out and say what (and how it) needs to be changed.
Very much thx in advance

For starters, look at the Sensei's Flying Machine. I'm assuming you are using rockets, so the Flying Machine will definitely help.

Good luck with that (eye_roll)
But really, that's going to be tough.PSN ID: Roundy210

Your most likely going to be using a lot of switches and rockets to make it run smoothly. A lot of people have used winches and such to make airplanes and they just didn't work out, or at least that's what I've seen.

i've allready developed one in my panzer tank level and i have to say that is very hard to do one that could be flyable by a sackpilot... in my level i didn't needed to make it flyable but i along the path of discovering how i would make a jet fighter bombing sequence realized that the rockets just start spinning the matter attached to them and it was very hard to control them.
i've played a level recently that have a beatifull space shuttle....give it a look and talk with the creator... perhaps he could help you

thx for the replies i've checked out mstr sensei's flying machine but that isn't going to help much because such an aircraft is pretty "easy"
to balance not like the plane I have in mind but thx anyway.
But I'm going to take a look to that space shuttle lvl thx.LBP rules

Also, ask Elbee. His Three Stage Rocket lets you steer it, so he might be able to give you some ideas.

Well first off I'd add lots of very small jets on the bottom so that you wouldn't need to keep a high speed up to stay aloft levels are only so big). You could activate them by just standing in the plane or by a two way.
Next add a rocket to the top and to the bottom for steering.
Then for your balance make a glass block and mount it in a rectangular tunnel on the bottom of the plane. The glass block would slide as the plane unbalanced and would trigger a mag switch at either end.
I'd allow the plane to whizz out of control if the player was stupid but if they want to cut out the turning and go straight again they could let go off the controls. Then depending on what mag switch was triggered, rockets would activate to get the glass block back in the centre.
Would take much testing but it's the best option I've got for now.
This is for a plane flying left to right by the way, not a rocket; they are much simpler.Last edited by Shermzor; 02-23-2009 at 03:56 PM.

thx but I already tried something similar and the problem is that whan you ascend too much on either side (the front or the back) the glass block starts to float in the air instead of sliding (probably because it's to small) and if i make it to big it gets stuck all the time.
I even tried a system with a circle attached with a bolt in the center (this circle is heavier on one side so when the plane tilts the heavier side goes down (also used the magnetic switches) here is the problem when you are more or less stabilised it doesnt return quickly enough and you tilt to the other side.
But a system like this would solve my problem of that the tilting also depends of the place sackboy stands in the plane.
starting to think about not really flying but use a 'car' at the top of my lvl with two winches and motor bolts.(but I'm not giving up on the rockets) This is just to can do more (like bombing etc. or taking magn keys with you in the plane) in a lvl becaus all of this doing while flying whould be impossible.
still didn't have time to check out that lvlLBP rules

Ok well mount one block on a piston and another on another piston (doesn't need to be on the plane). Then set it so grabbing one sponge will trigger one piston, another the other so that when you grab for too long it stops you from going down. A lot harder to balance but aside from creating a moving background I think the methods can only get more intricate and thermo heavy .

Two words. Float material.
If you add anything that isn't float material, you can compensate the weight by changing parts of the float material to the kind that "floats away if not tethered."
I made a plane using this method and it only needed two rockets [one on the bottom to lift up, the other on the back/tail to push forward] and a grab switch to get in the air.
You can steer by running left and right while holding onto the grab switch [some jumping may be required to turn quickly.]I don't do F4F! I'll still give feedback on your level, however.

A simple solution to the problem of unstable flight would be to have a rapidly emitted piece of dark matter material inside a snug enclosure that was connected to or within the craft by a piston in sync with the emitted material. Minute amounts of rocket thrust would be used to steer the craft while the dark matter keeps it in the air and the piston drags it forwards.

I'm going to check yours out. maybe, if you want to see how i did mine, you should check out my Dr. Tecnova's Lair level. i've got one with limited fuel (autopilot kinda) and one with infinite fuel. mine is more like a glider without any u/d control, but instead, you just control where you land.

Use gyroscopes to activate stabilisers...
Just had a brainstorm of this from nowhere..
Like glass boxes inside a rectange the height of the box and about 3 times the length..
Put a mag key on either end, so when the nose tips up, the block will slide back, and activate the mag switch (which you would connect a rocket that would spurt to put it back on course) and the tail dipping would have the opposite...
