    Default Superman

Hello Sackfolk, just in case you were wondering I am busily finishing off my latest level, yes.......Superman.

Have got the flight mechanics working pretty much how I want them now, just making some scenic bits and pieces and tinkering with the prize giver logic.

The aim of this level will be to fly Superman around Metropolis finding the Superman symbols which are hidden throughout the city. These symbols will appear in a random order and your only clues are 'hint' arrows which are on top of phone booths, these will point in the general direction of the next symbol each time you find and fly through the previous one.

There are 15 standard symbols to find, and, if you're quick enough, 5 more 'bonus' symbols worth much more pointswise.

As you progress you will win prizes, the higher your score the better the prize. Complete the entire level to win Superman himself!

Will hopefully publish and showcase the level this weekend if all goes to plan.

Very cool idea. I'm curious how this is going to look through LBPK goggles.
Check out the spotlighted Challenge of Sackulese,
and its sequel Sackulese and the Ourorbi!

Check out my latest level: Riptide Rush!

If you have the flight controls 'tight', it's going to wicked. I'm guessing your using a 'non-kart object' for superman.
Is it going to be single player or multiplayer?

  8. Thanks!

It's single player. The amount of logic stuck all over Superman would negate the possibility of multiplayer. I'm very pleased with the flight mechanics, I've made them user friendly (the initial testing by my daughter confirmed that the turning/banking/diving was far too severe), I liked it that way but agreed for less experienced players it might be too difficult.

Also Superman has a 'brake' of sorts so regardless of what speed/direction, hit the 'brake' (L2) and he slows abruptly and stops/hovers. I added this folllowing comments from my 'tester' that she kept running into buildings when at full speed, there are also points in the level where it's almost essential to be able to adjust Superman's direction accurately.

He has 3 levels of speed meaning it will be easier to control him at lower speed but you definitely won't get to all the checkpoint symbols before the time runs out, so you have to go for it at some stage!

    Technique!
Having a second tester (your daughter) as a resource for input is smart.
Even myself I have testers at each 'stage in build'. When you build alone, you'll take the paths you know will work ultimately avoiding the 'hot spots'. Sure "I" know how to move, why dont you? It's so simple like this 'X,L1,square, down, down, circle,x, right toggle spin...' see its easy.
Easy for the 'builder' hard for the 'player'.
So yes, having the outside influence 'as seen by player', your levels will be that much better.

If your superman is 'way to complex' to use in multiplayer, because of transmitters and recievers. Just copy logic and add 'p1, p2, p3' within the logic name tags. This would avoid 'cross-over control glitching'. If its because of 'thermo usage', there are ways around that too. -Grouping, capturing, and pasteing in new un-edited level (zero edited objects). Just copying and pasting 'whole level button' doesnt lower thermo, grouping pieces and remaking does.

Your Superman level kind sounds like the superman game for N64. Not that its a bad thing cause I'm sure your level is 100X's better.
When your done I'll be be playing it till I'm first, Mwahaha... so It better be challenging. It sounds like it will be with those 'extra bonuses'.

  11. Thanks!

I've played it through several times, so has my daughter, even the wife has had a go. Honestly, sometimes I've managed it, others not. Because of the random way the checkpoints appear it could be you're racing from one end of Metropolis to the other, the only hints you get are the arrows. This also means though that it's a different game everytime you play it. (Replayability anyone?)

In answer to your other query. It's the thermo. All my objects were made/edited in another 'design' level, then captured and placed into the Superman level. I learned that little trick a while ago, but still the thermo gets me every time. I've just about got enough left to put the instructions into this level, within a short cinematic sequence and that'll be it. I would've liked more cars, trucks, buses etc but there's just no more room!

Whats the time limit? how many checkpoints?
You should 'set-up a scene', take a picture and load it. Would enjoy seeing a "behind the scene sneek-peak".

Original time limit: 8 mins, but......in the interest of playability I'm probably going to increase this slightly, as you've already stated, I know where all the symbols might appear and I can't always complete it!

Total number of checkpoints: 20, prizes awarded according to score as you progress (how many symbols you find) and also some prizes might just become 'available to find' when you reach a certain score. You'll need to look out for them, I'm giving no more away than that.

I usually do a WIP thread with pics but wanted to keep this one under wraps until time to publish. Ok, just a couple then!

Great preview pictures, it gives a better understanding of 'concept'.
Looks like you have tons of details (great buildings and bridges).

Just one concern, During 'flying' do you have the ability to fly up and down at will? Cause my concern would be, flying beyond the sandbox either to far out or to far up. It this happens, you could solve it by creating forcefield level boundary walls and ceiling (level would be inside a forcefield box).

You mentioned something about 'running into walls'... and a thought occured no building would stop superman. So maybe a story intro...
Lex luther has released some sort of kryptonite rain over metropolis, Taking away supermans strength but leaving his speed. Meanwhile Lex luthers gang is leaving mind-altering superman logos around the city that makes anyone hallucinate when they look at them (at the 'sign' locations) and its your job collect them (within 8 minutes) and save the city.

It would solve the discussions on 'If I were superman I'd just fly throught the building' or 'Why cant he fly throught the buildings?'

If you like it and it works with your level take it.
Just pay me a bite of a penny.

Im just glad to actual see something visual, again it looks great.

  19. Thanks!

Superman wouldn't fly through a building just for kicks.

It cold be interesting with a story thrown in, but it also sounds like a strong level to stand on its own. Really depends on the creators descretion.

I do like V2C's narrative and comments on forcefield boundary idea. It depends on the player's objective. If their objective is to play the game then no problem.

The outer boundaries are actually cityscape stickers blown up on material so edges are sorted, however there is no 'ceiling' as some of the buildings are high and you may need to fly at height.

Superman can move in any direction, bank, turn, climb, dive, so it is possible to fly exceptionally high if you want, but why would you if you're trying to complete the level? Same goes for smashing into buildings, the idea is to fly as fast as possible to the next checkpoint, bumping into any object will slow you down and 'spin you out' in some cases (time to grab the 'brake' L2).

I think I'll leave the level as is and trust the discerning Sackfolk to play it properly, if they want to try to break it, it's up to them, at least they'll enjoy the scenery!

The ceiling comment doesnt come from a 'breaking the level' objective, it was mentioned as a player concern.
As the creator you talked about the 'randomizing' of objective pick-ups throught-out the level. But as a player they are unknown objectives for the first couple plays. Unless they are all the same height (which would making 'flying up/down void) , I would be concerned with the thought of other players unknowningly 'looking' to far up.

I think I know where you're coming from, however when you play the level you'll understand that this will not be an issue. The checkpoint symbols are not unknown objectives. The 'hint' arrows on top of the phone booths give a good idea where the next symbol is and there are enough phone booths scattered about so you're never too far away from a 'clue' !

I'm still excited to play it anyways. I have a feeling your pushing yourself and this level beyond.
Any word when you'll be hopefully publishing. I know it takes a long time, so no rush. Just want to be one of the firsts to play.

I'd like to think I push a little further with every new build! This one was all about the flight mechanics really. Everything else is just scenery and a little logic thrown in......maybe I'm doing myself an injustice? I'll let the community decide.

    Hope to publish this weekend.
