Default Endless Survival Vs Timed Minigames

Greetings, LBPC Community. All 4 of you.

So, I was going over some ideas I have for this particular multiplayer level I'm building, and I can't seem to settle on whether I should set it up in timed rounds, or have it last indefinitely until all players are eliminated/a certain score quota is met.
Normally I go with timed rounds of around 3 minutes, but this particular concept could go either way.

I would like to hear your input!
Can you think of some of your favourite minigames, what were there end-game rules?
Do you have caveates for which minigames should use what end-game rules?
For instance, a score target for a competitive puzzle, but a timer for a king-of-the-hill level?
If a timed game, how long do you prefer your bursts of play to last?

I thought it would interesting to see some ideas and perhaps light discussion about how best to setup minigames.

  2. Thanks!

    Hi Ostler5000,

I think that the answer is depending on the minigame...but one thing you should consider: if you're playing in a party and you have an endless setting, then its always boring for the eliminated players, if they have to wait for the last player "endlessly". I think that I would prefer time limited settings more!

    Many greetings, Jürgen^^

I personally like when there's a time limit AND it ends when only one player remains

Observe existing games that have this feature, and mimic the menu's it presents so that players are aware of what they are getting themselves into when one chooses "timed" vs "infinity".
Take Mario Party for example: the idea of the host making up the rules is kind of lame, but a necessary evil to stop the game eventually. So each minigame or event would have to be timed and infinity compatible, as well as the average time spent within each mini-game must be consistent (with exceptions such as ties, overtimes, etc). In the end, an endless survival should not take an endless amount of time. Try to measure what would be an "exhaustion point" which would be your replay value for minigames, and then set a limit for how much time one spends in endless survival based off the exhaustion point.

So say if I spend 1 minute in 1 minigame, and I made 10 minigames; endless survival mode should only take 3-5 minutes worth of minigames before you die to maintain replay value.

I guess it depends if you are also using the minigames AS the endless survival, kinda like Warioware, another amazing example of how consistent a multiplayer minigame fiesta can be.

If you got timed minigames and then some kind of endless survival mode that isn't a minigame though, then that's what it is.. exactly how i'm describing it, two completely different things, which could be 2 levels, etc.

If it isn't timed, having something to do while you have lost is always fun. For example, Lucidess made me think of Mario Kart's balloon battle for the N64 where when you died you turned into a bomb to eliminate other players to make it harder.

Oh yes, and its always been a triumph, if you managed to catch a player as a bomb, when he was focused to catch another player.
